If you are up north for the Fall Color Tours, stopping in at Castle Rock in St. Ignace is worth your while if you want to take a few beautiful pictures... you can climb to the top of Castle Rock and see the wonderful colors for miles around.

Just an FYI, there are a ton of stairs to climb to get to the top, so if you are not up for the climb, you might as well skip this side trip.

On a recent trip to Mackinac Island we made a last minute decision to cross the Mackinac Bridge and stay in the upper peninsula at St. Ignace.

I was surprised to learn that St. Ignace is the home of the Mackinac Bridge and is in fact the county seat for Mackinac County. It has all the same chain hotels as Mackinaw City but at better overall rates. Even after paying the bridge fare we still came out ahead.

This town has a picturesque boardwalk with a park at both ends and is the third oldest city in the United States.

While there are plenty of opportunities to spend money, the town does not feel like Disney and everybody from our hotel staff to Lindsay, the shuttle driver from Star Line, treated us like family.

Overall I'd say this was one of our top vacation experiences ever and we look forward to returning next year.
