“No returns from us”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2009

I loved the hot breakfast. This was great. Pool was ok. Dont expect personal attention. Your on your own. If you want quite stay , stay on the third floor. The second and first you better expect noise from little feet running up and down the rooms. You can here walking and running. Boom Boom Boom = headache. Our room needed to be sweeped and it had a funky smell to it.

We stayed for two nights in a room with two Queen sized beds and a gorgeous view of the lake. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean (with the exception of some spiders who had made their way in), and the staff we dealt with were very friendly. The balcony had tons of spider webs on the chairs.

The biggest "problem" that we had was with the guests at breakfast time. They were like animals who hadn't eaten in weeks! The staff really tried to keep the buffet stocked up, but some of the people were doing a whole "horde the food" thing. Not the hotel's fault, I suppose. Neither was the stupid woman painting her daughter's toenails at one of the breakfast tables while people were trying to eat.

The pool was overchlorinated and burned the eyes pretty bad. It also had a bit of an oily layer of stuff on the water, guessing from hair products or something. The hot tub water wasn't the cleanest I've ever seen either, and the temperature could've been bumped up a few degrees to actually make it a "hot" tub.

I think that due to pricing, the hotel gets a large number of guests who've never stayed in a "nice" place before, and their behavior reflects that. Personally, I'd rather pay an extra $40 or $50 a night to stay at a hotel with a classier clientele instead of dealing with the people we saw. For the price, though, it wasn't bad.

  • Liked — The view of the lake. The friendly staff. Breakfast food was good.
  • Disliked — Oily layer of scum in the pool and hot tub. Inconsiderate guests.

Went for a pleasure trip to see the fall colors. Stayed the night before in the Holiday Inn in Mackinaw across the bridge, but came here when the other could not give us two nights in a row. Check in -easy. Found people friendly. Cheaper than Mackinaw City. Large lobby. Breakfast was ample.. Breakfast attendant says hotel is closed in a month for the winter. We had a lovely bed with pillows that were engraved firm or soft. Slept well. Nice showerhead and curved curtain. We had a kingsized bed and were very comfortable. We paid $109 for a Jacuzzi with a king. Mackinaw City Holiday Express wanted $159. We did not pay for a lakeside room but could see the lake from a side window.

After seeing the reviews for this Hotel, I was a bit nervous, but booked anyway. I trust the HI Express brand, because we have enjoyed many stays with this chain in various locations with out problem. This hotel was okay, but did not match the quality for value of other HI Express properties. I'll start with the positive. The view was spectacular from the 3rd floor. The lake is beautiful, the island view was great, etc. This hotel is right on the "beach" as advertised, but a more acurate description would be lakefront. Still beautiful to sit on the balcony, look out over the lake and hear the waves. The inside of the hotel was clean, rooms were large and clean. I am a clean freak, so this means a lot! The breakfast was more than adequate, but I suggest taking it back to your room, as there is very little seating in the area. The pool and hot tub area were also nice. I also highly suggest staying in St. Ignace over Mackinaw City. Much less crowded, and there is a great little restaraunt right in the Hotel parking lot. Seems to be a favorite for locals. We had breakfast, the menu is extensive, fodd was good. If you do go to the city, be sure to check out Nona Lisa Italian restaraunt. The food was good, and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. The prices are a little on the high side. I also suggest taking the Star Line ferry, they have a great package deal that includes round trip ferry, carriage tour , which is a must if this is your first time on the island, and entry to the fort. Very economical for a family of four, I think it was a total of $240.00 for all.
Once on the Island, the is also a great Irish restaraunt. Large portions, great food, reasonable prices, and everything from Nachos (HUGE portion) to traditional Irish fare.
Back to the hotel.
The only negative things I have to say about this property is most importantly, that the beds were very uncomfortable. Holiday Inn is known for their big, comfortable beds, and luxurious linens. Not found here. The bed was very old, hard and obviously cheap. The linens were decent, although not what you would expect. There are only two small vending machines in the entire hotel, and while most HI Express chains set out cookies and milk in the evening, they did not. Bring snacks/drinks with you, especially with kids. There was a spider problem on the out side of the hotel, on the balcony, in window frames, etc. I did not see any on the inside though. The shower is also very short. The shower head is probably only abuot 6 feet from the ground, which can be rather uncomfortable for someone on the tall side.
Overall, things were not bad though. Put some new pillowtop beds in the rooms, and I would stay again.

The Holiday Inn Express of St Ignace takes all reviews seriously. As of Spring 2010, all the mattress are brand new. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

Stayed here two nights. First room ("lake front") had nice view, but family with 2 kids overhead. We asked to be moved, and went to the other end of the 2nd floor. Later that afternoon, another family with 2 kids checked in above us. Kids aren't the problem, it's the hotel construction. Lots of bumping, running, booms from above. Finally called front desk at 10:30pm to ask them to call them and ask them to be more considerate. After a few more booms/bumps, it settled down and we got to sleep. So - request a room on the top floor! Also know that the "lake front" is a view - the beach is rocky and only fit for walking/exploring, not swimming.

St. Igance worked well and was less expensive than Mackinaw City. Ferrys to the island were nearby. $108 a night with tax.

Picture in the website looks awesome. But I felt pathetic when I got into the room. Not to forget I saw a few spiders along the stairs and hallway.
The break fast area is too small that it could hardly accomodate 20 people in the room.

  • Liked — Near to the bridge and the transit to the island
  • Disliked — hardly anything

We booked the 2 Queen, Jacuzzi room via lastminute.com. After reading the reviews here, i wasn't expecting too much. Our room was very nice and clean, with only a little tattered carpet at the edge of the bathroom. The staff was friendly and helpful. We checked out the other hotels on St. Igance, and they were not any better, and most didn't have the ability to sleep more then 2 with a jacuzzi. The beach was as expected, just like every other beach on the lake, full of seagulls and geese (rats with wings) there was a little more sand at the hotel next door, and they told us we were welcome to come over there, but just as much seagull doo there! wear your flipflops, and i'd suggest the hotel get a couple big cats! :) I much preferred the atmosphere of St. Ignace to Mackinaw City, and there ISN'T much more to do over there as a previous reviewer had mentioned. A very laid back coastal town. Eat at the Driftwood Inn. Its a bar, with great food, open late, and the kids loved the old arcade games. Of all the places on our great lakes loop, this was my favorite town. The only downfall was we were there the week before the high season, which was great numbers wise, but the St. Ignace Ferries did not stay quite as late as the others. I highly recommend doing Mackinaw Island later, rather then early morning! most tourists are headed home as we were arriving at 2pm! we got an extra long buggy ride because we were last of the day, and we could actually ride our bikes on the island without it being like NYC at 5pm!

  • Liked — Proximity to town, water front location
  • Disliked — curve of the building so everyone has a view of the lake, and EACH OTHER
