We stayed at the K Royal Motor Inn in St. Ignace, MI during the middle of October 2005. My family and I have been staying here for years because of the value/price and we believed we would have yet another wonderful stay. The rooms here are nice, very clean, with an excellent view of Mackinac Island if you stay in the original units that face the island and run parallel to the road. The previous review stated the carpet and sheets were old, this was not and has never been the case for us. The rooms have always been clean. There is a newer building, (stayed in it once, also nice) but this does not have a view of the island.
During this stay I noticed the very high number of spiders. They are everywhere! On the stair railings, in the bathtub, on the windows, ceiling, etc. We have never had this problem in our past stays here. I was killing probably 5-10 spiders everyday with shoes and the ice bucket in the room.
In addition, we had a problem with the maid skipping our room. We returned from our day of traveling the U.P. and our room had not been cleaned. So...the main office sent the maid up to clean our room while we were in it. A little inconvenient, but it got done.
There is a complimentary breakfast here. Orange juice, mini donuts, coffecake, coffee, and toast. Nothing fancy, but just enough to start the day as you watch the sunrise over the water.
There is also a sandy beach with giant rocks that is on Lake Huron. Pretty clean, with grills, chairs, and a small playground for the kids. The setting here is peaceful and quiet at night. Also, you can see the Northern Lights on nights that the weather permits.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel to U.P. travelers who are not intimidated by spiders and are looking for a nice, friendly place to spend the night during their travels. As I said, we have never had this many problems before and I am hoping the service improves, as we will most likely stay here again.
