“Day at the Water Park only”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

The water park is fun. Service is fine, but we were very disappointed that the hot tub was not hot. In fact it was downright cold. After climbing all those steps carrying giant tubes, you want to be able to relax for a while in a hot tub....but nope...not that day. Also, the shower head in the family room was broke and we could not shower. Other than that, the slides are always a blast.

Double JJ has such a wide variety of things to do, it's impossible to get bored. We stay in the Loft which is more moderately priced and we always get the splash package with all you can eat breakfast included. Then depending on the weather we spend time in the Back Forty horseback riding and all of the activities available there.

Double JJ is our very favorite place to go for a relaxing get away and we go on average 2 to 3 times a year. If you compare Double JJ to other similar resorts, you will find that it is moderately priced and has TONS more to do.

We also love the friendliness and awesome service we receive. Have never had a problem that wasn't quickly and graciously taken care of. Double JJ is the best!!!

Room Tip: We love the Lofts as they are more moderately priced but still close to the indoor water park.

Booked a surprise getaway weekend with a friend for our daughter's 15th birthday. We stayed Fri/Sat at the end of April and had beautiful weather for the weekend. Stayed in a 6 person cabin in the Back Forty. The cabin was cute, no complaints really, but rather small. Technically it does sleep 6 but if we had 6 people we would have been tripping over each other.
Friday night the girls went to the waterpark.....it is no Great Wolf Lodge that is for sure, but they had fun. The fee was $25 per person but for an extra $10 you could add a 2nd day for the waterpark, which we did. Girls particpated in line dancing and were entertained during Karaoke. On Sunday they did the horse trail ride and loved it as it was their first ride on horses.....they actually rode them for a 2nd trail ride. The ranch hands were wonderful and the horses were well cared for. Bit of advice: I would bring your own helmet. They do not seem to sanitize them.

Overall a great time was had. It was a slow weekend so it was not overcrowded at all. I'm not sure I would like it as much if the hotel/back forty was packed. The front desk staff was very helpful. Pizza was good, loved having Starbucks & ice cream on site. Not sure that I would return for a second trip but was definitely a fun weekend!!

We stayed in a suite and it was beautiful . Everything was clean and comfortable, loved the fireplaces, whirlpool, tub and balcony. We enjoyed a steak dinner at the Sundance restaurant, visited the gift shop and stopped by to listen to karaoke . We left happy and relaxed.

We stayed in the Back Forty area in a cabin. First off let me say that the cabin was super cute and there is a fire pit area that is a great little perk. The sleep options in the cabin were way below expectations. The pull out bed in the living room area was run down and falling apart; the mattress was about 3 inches thick, old, and falling apart. We ended up piling every blanket on top of it so it was sleepable, but even then it was difficult to get comfortable. The most comfortable bed in the cabin was the queen bed in the master bedroom, but it didn't seem like the bed spread had been washed in a while. The kids said the twin beds in the loft were comfy, so that's a bonus. The water in the cabin is well water, I've had experience with well water before, but I have never smelled well water like this before. It reeked of sulfur and made it pretty much impossible to use the jacuzzi.

The Ranch was fantastic. All the wranglers were friendly and really helpful. Don't miss the riding evaluations or "Pony" rides. An hour long private trail ride is only $35 which is only $10 more than the group so it's really worth it. The petting farm was really clean and the animals seemed happy.

The waterpark could use some better lifeguards. A lifeguard told my 4 year old nephew (without a vest) to cross the 4' deep pool rope/log area from the other side, where he immediately fell into the water and sunk to the bottom. We had to jump in the water to save him, the "lifeguard" didn't bat an eye. It was a really scary moment and happened as soon as we got to the waterpark and were just feeling it out. My nephew is still talking about how he "almost died" 3 days later.

The food at the resort is beyond terrible. We had lunch at the "Rustler's Roost". Hot dogs were gray, chicken fajita wrap was ice cold, burger was over cooked. When we asked for chocolate milk we were told it expired on the 17th of the previous month and the fridge has been broke... then we were given a look like "you can take the risk"... why would you even offer that??
We sprung for the Sundance Steakhouse for dinner... what a joke. We ordered the Spinach dip, which was a large portion, but came with about 10 pita slices, when we ran out we were told that we would have to pay for an order of them. Really??? $2.00 when we only need a few more? And we had to order those from the hostess, because our waitress disappeared. When our food arrived, my nephew's burger, that he ordered "well done" was charred so bad it was completely inedible. My steak, that I ordered "Medium rare" was cooked through and not even pink. When the hostess put in the order to remake it she asked for it to be "rare"... well it came back blue. I don't think anyone at the steakhouse actually knows how to cook a steak. I suggest if you are staying at the resort to bring your own food. We are thinking about going back if there is another Groupon in the Fall and we will definitely bring our own food.

This isn't a place we can go to often due to cost, but we did have a nice stay. We stayed in the Thoroughbred Suites which were very nicely decorated and comfortable. The bed in the smaller bedroom was too hard and we couldn't have slept in it more than the two days we were there. The place is in the middle of nowhere so make sure you bring in snacks/sodas/food. A single bottle of pop sold for $2.50 from the gift shop, and I'm not talking about a 2 liter, just a single serving. Our Suite was very clean!

The kids had a blast in the water park, in the off season the park is only open Friday evening through early Sunday evening so if that's important to you, check the hours before you reserve. We were there on the last night snow tubing was available and that was a blast! We got to have a cold, but enjoyable trail ride but we didn't reserve the dog sledding in time and missed out. If this is something you want to do you need to reserve it ahead of time. The staff throughout the resort was friendly and helpful.

Food is a bit expensive, but they have a captive audience due to the location. Just like Disney, they ran with it. Plan ahead to bring things with you and avoid eating out too often if cost is a factor. The food was very good though and we did not go hungry!

My only real complain was with the roads inside the resort, it was early spring and the roads were very rutted and rough. They need to invest in pavement!

We're looking forward to visiting this summer for a rodeo and pig roast, we'll do a weekend again and will come better prepared this time.

Room Tip: The Thoroughfare Suites were wonderful!

Have that name re-written in all of your advertisements. It will become much more inviting.

Prices should be adjusted so that the lower middle class (under 80K per Year) can also easily afford to stay at your location. The staff should be more friendly and less formal. It feels like visiting a funeral home walking up to the registration desk. The staff made me feel unwelcome as I had been out hiking with my wife and we were of course dirty (state parks don't clean the trails with vacuums or floor polishers).

Again, for the lower middle class, meals costing 1/2 of a days pay are too expensive. Either you are paying too much for your raw ingredients, or you are padding your pockets greatly. That might be okay if you cater to the filthy rich upper 5%, but you bill yourself as a resort EVERYONE can afford. Yeah, right.
