I stayed at the Crowne Plaza hotel with my husband June 13-16. We were in town to visit family and friends.
The hotel has a shuttle to run you to and from the airport. We used it to get to the hotel when we arrived. Just call on the courtesy phone and the driver will come and get you.
Check In- Pretty easy. I prepaid for the room and called in advance to see what their deposit policy was. I left them a cash deposit for things like room service charges. That was all fine and we got our keys and went to our room. The only problem there is that is was exactly the room I requested that we NOT have (a room with a balcony overlooking their lobby). We headed back down to the front desk and I was expecting them to have an attitude when I asked that we be switched to a different room. I was pleasantly surprised and the person who helped me was professional and courteous and moved us to their 9th floor "quiet zone".

Room- The room was a standard, average hotel room. King size bed, desk, chair, TV, average bathroom. The temperature control worked great (it is VERY hot in the hotel halls because of the atrium style windows and I was very afraid it would be too hot in our room). The bed was pretty comfortable and they give you a gift pouch with earplugs, an eye mask, and lavender spray in it, along with a soothing CD. Occasionally I could hear the rumblings of a plane taking off (this hotel is right next to the airport) but nothing that bothered either of us at all. The room was clean and we received excellent housekeeping during our stay (I did tip and received a nice thank you note and fresh sheets!). We ordered room service a few times during our stay and the food is excellent- it's from the restaurant they have in-hotel and it was very convenient. The first time we ordered we got a call from the front desk asking for a credit card number and I had to tell them I left a cash deposit for these things. They confirmed that though, and there was no problem after that.

Check Out- Easy. I just told them my room number and they gave me the remaining balance of my deposit.

All in all this was a very serviceable hotel for our stay and I plan to stay at the Crowne Plaza again during our next trip out there.

We stayed here one night when we were visiting family in the area. The first night we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express - Allen Park, which was terrible (see my review). It was so bad we checked out the next morning. I had considered staying at the Crowne Plaza because of its price point on Expedia: $89/nt. When I called to see if they had any rooms available for the night, the reservations representative quoted my $99/nt. I told her that I saw the room for $89 on Expedia and she "found" a better rate available for $89. This leads me to my first point: when dealing with Holiday Inn/Crowne Plaza reservation departments ALWAYS ask for their best rate, because the rate they usually give you first is not their best rate. Because they quickly quoted me $89 upon my inquiry, I won't let the rate discrepancy affect my review.

Check in was a breeze with no hassles and courteous clerks.

The property is clean, but a little outdated. It has a late 80's-early 90's feel. The enormous, glass enclosed lobby is clearly the focal point of this property. It hosts pretty much everything: the front desk, bellman's station, common sitting areas, elevators, store, pool and the bar and restaurant. The lobby is the property's greatest asset and its greatest weakness (as I will describe shortly).

The rooms were large, clean and well-appointed. We had a room that had a balcony that opened up to the lobby. Normally, I would have no objection, but on this particular night a group of high-schoolers hi-jacked the pool and were remarkably loud. So loud, that any extended stint in the lobby was intolerable. Thankfully, they shut the pool down at 11pm on Saturday nights (I believe it is 10pm on every other night). We had to keep our balcony doors shut until 11pm when the noise ceased. Gratefully, the hotel did a good job at soundproofing the rooms so that when the doors were closed and the pool loud, it wasn't so distracting. My recommendation to the hotel: close the pool earlier or don't allow kids in after 8 or 9pm.

The bar at the hotel was pretty sad. It looks like the decorator spent about 10 mins on this area of the hotel. About 1/3 of the beers they showed on their menu were not available and it was filled with cigarette smoke (no smoking ban in Detroit) and about 3 patrons (compared to the circus in the lobby). No flat screens. Find another bar down the street.

The breakfast at the Bistro was okay. Nothing special. The service was friendly, attentive, but remarkably informal. There was nobody in the restaurant with us. It was kind of strange given the circus that we witnessed in the lobby the night before.

Overall, this was a nice, utilitarian stay for us. We got a spacious room, a comfortable bed, a clean bathroom and a pretty good value. We would stay here again if we needed a bed to sleep in.

My husband, two young children and I stayed at this hotel the night before an early flight out of Detroit Metro. We arrived around 9 pm and the staff was very polite and welcoming. I wasn't required to leave a credit card, which was nice, since I'd prepaid via Hotwire. The kids went in the pool for a while until it closed. We had to request towels as there weren't any available at the pool, but the towels were delivered within a half hour or so. The room was clean and updated. It was mostly soundproof with regard to airplanes flying over, but we could hear the people next door pretty well. We left via airport shuttle at 5 am. The shuttle was prompt and professional. There were too many people for one shuttle, so they sent two, one for each terminal, which was very nice. I would stay here again, especially since the room was only $69 on Hotwire.

  • Liked — Location - close to airport and had a shuttle to the airport.
  • Disliked — No free wi-fi.

We were looking for a hotel that was kid friendly, and it was. The pool was great and open till 10 pm. It didnt open till 10 am though, which was a little rough for the kids. Gift store in hotel and great restaurant. Also other restaurants close by. Only 15 minutes from Comerica and Ford Field. Right next to airport, but couldn't hear the planes. IF i go to Detroit for another tigers or lions game, this is where I will stay.

  • Liked — Right off I-94 into Detroit
  • Disliked — not as many tv stations as some, couldnt get the tigers on in detroit
