Over the past few years I've been staying almost every month at the DTW Westin. I liked being right there for my early morning flights and I love their suite upgrades. (Jacuzzi tubs and a separate Heavenly shower- what could go wrong?) I still love the Westin, but I'm cheating on them with the new Sheraton DTW.
In case you're confused, there are THREE Starwood hotels by Detroit Airport. Westin is part of the airport, and Sheraton and Four Points by Sheraton are across the freeway. I've stayed at the 4 Points and found it quite nice- all renovated and a good restaurant. But as a Starwood Preferred Guest I like to earn Starpoints (same as a Frequent Flier Account with points instead of miles) and the 4 Points only offers Platinum Members half of the usual "gift" of 500 points, while the rates are almost exactly the same most nights as the nearby Sheraton.
When I 1st tried the Sheraton, it wasn't really ready. By that I mean it was still under construction, and there were no suite upgrades. I love suite upgrades (who wouldn't) but as the economy dropped, I've been staying more and more at the cheaper 4 Points. Still, earning only half the amount of points is a sore spot with me. I booked my June stay at the new Sheraton.
When I checked in, I was quite impressed by the new lobby and the whole look of the hotel. I was attended to right away, and upgraded to a HUGE suite! The employees are absolutely fascinating, from Tam who brought me a gift from Guest Services, to the sweet lady who checked me in.
I'm kicking myself for spending twice the amount of money to stay at Westin, or the same amount for the 4 Points, when I could've been staying here all year. The employee kindness is definitely one of the things I'll remember most about my stay, and the huge suite would be the 2nd. Not only did I have a regular room with a bed, tv, bathroom, etc., but I had the connecting room which was larger than our basement rec room. The kitchenette with fridge and microwave was quite helpful and the comfy sectional and leather chair were like butter.
My ONLY regret was that I didn't arrive earlier. I had to leave at 4am in order to catch the shuttle to the airport, and I didn't arrive until 4:30pm. Not even 12 hours but it was worth the stay and then some!
Guest Services sent up a lovely gift of Panna Water and delicious fresh fruit with mouth-watering thick whipped creme which reminded me of a meringue pie. The card had a lovely quote and was handwritten. These employees really took time to make sure I was comfortable and happy. The employee who brought the fruit was a wonderful man named Tam, who was fun to chat with.
I saw Tam again in the Club Lounge and the lady there couldn't have been nicer. She had no problem with my taking my food out of the lounge and to my room and I was quite grateful. Also, the Club was very nice with very good food, including hot appetizers. I had to leave too early to get breakfast, but the evening spread was quite nice. Again, I was impressed.
I slept very well and woke too early but rested and happy. The shuttle was actually faster than Westin's shuttle, which you need unless you're in Westin's terminal, which I'm not.
I was so impressed that I've booked another stay for Sunday, the night before my next flight. I look forward to the kind employees and incredibly nicely remodeled hotel. Sheraton at Detroit Metro Airport is not the usual airport hotel. It's more like a hotel you'd find in a resort area. From the indoor pool to the unique architecture, this Sheraton is much nicer than the 4 Points and on par with the Westin.
Again, kudos to the kind employees and management. They certainly know how to treat a guest! Can't wait to return on Sunday and have a little more time to enjoy the luxe surroundings!
