“A Great Hotel Experience in Northern Michigan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

This is a beautiful, historic hotel conveniently located in downtown Petoskey. Everything was perfect, including our top-floor balcony looking out on the bay from where we could watch the sun set. The room also came with a $25 credit in the Rose Room for breakfast the next morning, and that was another unforgettable experience.

Room Tip: The rooms with the balconies looking toward the bay are the best and are more roomy than the lower-p...

Petosky is one of our favorite cities to visit. This year we chose to stay there for our aniversary and made reservations for a Thursday and Friday (Friday being our aniversary day). A week before our stay it was evident that we would not be able to stay the Thrusday night so I called to modify our reservation to only the Friday. That change was no problem with the gentleman that took my call and verbally confirming our stay for Friday night in one of their King rooms with a Bay view. After driving the 2.5 hours to Petosky we arrived at the Perry Hotel to check in only to find out they had no reservation for us and of course there were no suitable rooms available. The Hotel staff made us feel like we were lieing about having a reservation until we were able to show the original confirmation number. Even then there has no real apology or attemp to make things right. We also overheard another family had to wait a couple of hours before they could get into their room because it was cleaned yet. A hotel like the Perry should have sufficient cleaning staff to get it all cleaned by check in time. A large wedding party however had no problems getting their rooms. We are very disapointed in the Stafford's Perry Hotel and other properties. We will NOT be staying in any of Stafford's properties in the future and will let all our friends know what happened to us and NOT recommend this Hotel.

Dear Robert P,
Please accept our sincere apologies for the problems you and your wife encountered when a planned stay at our hotel went terribly wrong. We accept full responsibility for canceling the wrong night on your original reservation. A power failure in our city prevented us from finding your original record until service was restored nearly two hours later and because we cancelled the wrong night we no longer had the room type and bed size you were looking for to celebrate your special occasion. We would not have the favorable reviews from trip advisor followers that we do if we made it a practice to ruin our guests' anniversaries. You will hear from us privately with an offer to return at our expense. We again offer our sincere apologies and we will make every attempt to make this up to you and your wife in the future.
Sincerely, S. Reginald Smith, Vice President and General Manager.

Spent two nights at the Perry. Have travelled to the area for 30+ years and had eaten there and attended events but never stayed. The place is beautiful, the location is perfect. The views of the bay are absolutely breath-taking. Food is wonderful and great variety. Few steps and you're in the gaslight shopping district, across from a park, a short walk to the bay. Beautiful. Staff are attentive and wonderful. Rooms charming, spotlessly clean. Floors do creak but you're in a classic old hotel so it's to be expected. Dining room views/table service outstanding.

HOWEVER, when we settled into bed we noticed that the blinds and decorative draperies did not prevent the outside light from coming in. We tried to adjust the curtains to block more light, propped up pillows in the window opening to block light, but by 6:00a in a yellow room there was no sleeping to be had. And we needed to sleep. So we were exhausted for two days. If the drapes simply had blackout lining they would be perfect, attractive yet functional.

Room Tip: Pay to get a view of the bay. You won't regret it. Higher level floors, preferably the top, so...

Thank you for the constructive feedback concerning the blinds needed in one of the guestrooms. I will have our decorator address this situation right away. The rooms facing East on the upper floors do get direct sun early in the morning during the summer. We also appreciate your favorable comments on the other aspects of your stay with us. Sincerely, Reginald Smith.

we chose the Perry for our 35th wedding anniversary, and was not disappointed. the two room suite overlooking the lake was classic and very roomy. it had two bathrooms, two televisions, perfect internet connection and a large living room space. the lake view was perfect and the walk out to the patio was really ideal. we enjoyed the whole experience.

the hotel has two restaurants, which were both very good. our room package included a breakfast voucher. breakfast was delicious with our table looking out to the lake. white tablecloths and a very pleasant upscale atmosphere rounded out the weekend.

the hotel has old world charm with wing back chairs in the rooms, large hallways with vintage decor. the Perry has been well maintained and was actually busy while we stayed there. they offer free coffee, tea and hot cocoa service, a small library, and computer access in the lounge off the lobby. i felt the reservation and welcome service was very nice.

we did not see valet service, but did not require it for our stay. they have a small exercise room which we saw, but did not use.

Room Tip: we stayed on the main floor with the walkout to the patio and grounds from our room. the lake view...

Just spent 2 wonderful nights at the Perry. Can't say enough good things about it. Our room was spotless(211), everything in the room that we needed and more. The room has a balcony that overlooks Traverse Bay. We saw one of the most beautiful sunsets we've ever seen. Check in was flawless, everyone was there to please. Coffee in the lobby that tasted like real coffee and can be taken back to your room. Tea and hot chocolate were also available. The housekeepers were some of the best I've seen. Friendly and courteous, always greeting you with a smile.
Went for restaurant week and couldn't have had a nicer time.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a balcony stay on the 2nd floor. If it rains you're covered by the balco...

Love the ambience, throwback turn of the century design, location, staff, rooms, and food - especially breakfast. I have only two complaints as a business traveler. (1) would like a copy machine in the business area - staff happy to do it but it's inconvenient. (2) internet access is terrible; having stayed here twice now in two different rooms it is not reliable. Also note: unable to control heat from the room. My room was 60 degrees and I learned the hard way that you have to ask front desk staff to control the temperature from the central computer system.

Stafford's Perry is an annual destination for us when traveling to Northern Michigan. The first thing you notice is the staff. They are friendly and always accommodating. The rooms are comfortable and each one is a bit different. All are decorated to compliment the historic style of the building. It is almost like staying in a very large bed & breakfast. Breakfast is offered in the main dining room with huge glass windows overlooking Little Traverse Bay. Weather permitting the front porch is open for food service. Lunch and dinner are also served daily. For more casual "bar" fare The Noggin Room on the lower lever offers burgers, etc. For some reason we always feel "at home" while staying at this hotel. You step into the door, take a breath and go back just a bit in time.

Room Tip: Rooms that are in the wing off of the dining room are more isolated and the hallway traffic is minim...
