“Historic Hotel With Modern Conveniences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

This is a lovely historic hotel that maintains its charm while offering modern amenities in the bathrooms and rooms. I was told that each room is different and the ones that we stayed in were charming. We had a double double with balcony and an accessible single. The only complaint was the double doubles only have a walk out balcony (more like a Juliet) rather than a full balcony. But we still had the same great views and sunsets.

We dined at the Rose Garden and enjoyed our meals, the breakfasts on the front porch were fantastic, especially with the $12.50 voucher per room. And we even enjoyed the performers at the pub one evening.

The hotel is convenient to the shopping and other amenities in Petoskey. I would recommend this hotel for anyone wanting something other than cookie cutter hotels on the highway.

Room Tip: The balconies give you the best view of the bay and the sunset.

I've stayed at this property twice, most recently for a week in June 2012. For a hotel originally built over 100 years ago, it maintains a great sense of history while still being modern enough for a contemporary guest. The staff are incredibly friendly. The breakfasts are amazing and served in a lovely room with a great view of the bay. I've found the hotel clean and well taken care of on both occasions. The location is also great because it is easy walking distance to several great restaurants in downtown Petoskey and to many cute shops. It's also close to a path that will take you down to the downtown harbor and allow you to walk along the bay. The hotel wi-fi was great as well for allowing me to get some work done while I was there. My only complaint is that the drinks seemed a little watered down in the hotel bars, but the food in the Noggin Room was good. I'd definitely recommend the hotel to friends.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms can be a little small. If you want space, you may want to upgrade to one of the l...

We dined here as non-residents and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. On a fine evening choose the Rose Garden Veranda to eat and as a bonus watch the sun set over the lake.Extremely pleasant English Rose Garden setting overlooking Little Traverse Bay. Beer battered white fish was truly delicious and affordable. The service was good too, so a memorable evening.

We stayed in this historic hotel for two nights celebrating our 50th anniversary. It was built around 1900 and has much of its original charm. If you like old hotels you will fine, however, if you are looking for all the modern facilities this is probably not the place for you. The floors are not level and you can hear those above you walking around. The furniture is not antique and is in average shape. The room is very clean. We had a room with a king bed and fold out couch, with a gas fireplace. It was advertised as a partial view of the water but you had to really look to the right to see it. The rooms facing the water had fabulous views but are really expensive.

The positives of this property are:
.... it is right down town ... one block from all the shops
.... the lobby area on the first floor is really great... original to hotel with antique furniture
.... it is very quiet
.... the main restraunt is good and has a great view of the water... however it is very expensive. we had breakfast there both mornings... had coffee, 2 eggs and toast, and one small orange juice... it cost $20.
.... the pub down stairs is great... not as expensive... great atmosphere and service.. we had dinner there.
.... the people who work there are very friendly and helpful

The bad things about the property are:
.... the parking... there were two wedding receptions on saturday night... we went out to dinner and when we came back there was no parking spaces available. I had to drive around to find a space on the street. I feel that they should reserve parking for registered quests by having someone at the entrance during weddings.
..... room cleaning... when we checked into the room we opened the fold out couch to check the bedding and found out that the sheets had not been changed. However, the hotel did sent someone up quickly to change them.
.... condition of room where you get coffee in the morning.... it really is in need of renovation.
.... condition of sleeping rooms.... they are also in need of renovation.
.... the front porch is great for relaxing... and they serve drinks from the bar.

We had our anniversy dinner at the Stafford Pier Restraunt which is owned by the same company. It was fantastic... but expensive... great service, great food, and great service.

The bottom line is if you like historic properties and can accept the things I have listed you will probably enjoy staying here. It certainly isn't on the same scale as, for example, The Dearborn Inn in Detroit.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a good view of the water... you will have to pay a lot more because the parti...

Very nice hotel; very clean. Rooms might need a little updating, but overall we were very pleased. The restaurant was EXCELLENT! Very nice common area in the basement area - nice for conversation, reading, they have 2 computers to use, free coffee, tea, etc. Would definitely go back for another visit.

i was very surprised when i got to our room and realized it only had a full size bed, expected at least a queen size bed and one that was more comfortable. It didn't even cross my mind to ask about the bed size when i made the reservation. Dining room is very nice. Convenient location.

I'm not sure that I can give a fair review about this property. I like everything to be as new as possible, which may not be fair to this review since its an older property, which to some has its charms. However, I will try to be as non-biased as possible and give you the facts.

The location is unbeatable! Its pretty much next to the water, and slightly uphill so you can get a wonderful view of the water (even from the 2nd floor where I am). Its walking distance from all the boutiques, bars and restaurants. There are two restaurants in this Hotel. One is part of a Bar/Grill, the other is Fancy with a very nice view of the Lake.

The Room : Old Colonial Style, Clean, .. kinda has that "I'm visiting Grandma n' Grandpa ... in 1966" look. That being said, I do believe it has its own charms if you're into that. Old wallpaper look with the antique furniture look. Theres a study desk, but my knees kept hitting the table since its so low. Couch and Bed are decent. Bathroom is nice, though if you are anywhere taller than 5'7", the water from the shower head (non-adjustable) will hit your chest and you will have to duck down to wash your hair and face. The Thermostat is also pre-set and NOT adjustable. It was a comfortable setting in here but if you feel hot too easy, it might be an issue. Also the floors are ooooold and squeeeeaky!!! Kinda goes with the territory of being an old 1800's property.

GYM: pretty basic, one treadmill and some bikes. You will NOT be motivated to work out here. Its ok, theres some beautiful scenery outside so you can walk around and get enough exercise.

Internet Speed: Download Speed- a Whopping 0.96 mbps and Upload Speed another Whopping 0.95 mbps.... thats the slowest i've seen any hotel for both. However, I am able to write this review using the internet speed given. Good luck to me posting a picture!

Food: i'd say the Nogen Room (Pub/Grill) has the best food. I thought it had more flavor. The upstairs diner was a bit more bland. (Again, very subjective as everyones food taste differs).

Pros: Location. Good food at Pub. Clean. Very Very Nice and Friendly Staff. Has Elevator and Stairs (being such an old property I didn't think it would have an elevator but it does). Comfortable bed and very nice pillows!, Flat Screen TV (about 27").

Cons: Slow internet (ok for emails), squeaky floors and uneven floors, low desk height, low shower head, sub-par gym, not enough power sockets.

Overall: If you like the old colonial style, this might be just what you're looking for. If you are into Newer Hotel Lines, do not stay here. I am changing Hotels tomorrow! :)
I would have added pictures, but internet is too slow. Maybe later :)

Dear Travelling Doctor 786,
Thank you for sharing your experiences at our hote with the followers of Trip Advisor. I found your extended review to be a fair evaluation of our hotel and perhaps a bit slanted toward the commercial or business traveller. We are an historic property and every guest room has a unique decor and furniture package. Some are more comfortable for business travel with a larger desk and some are more comfortable for families on vacation and still others are designed for couples. There are a lot of creaks and squeaks although we do add sound board to our guest rooms as we replace the carpet to limit this disturbance. We are doing 7 guest rooms as I write this response. Our internet is configured in an effort to limit the amount any single user has on the wireless side so that one person's activity does not limit other users. We do have other internet capabilities for meeting rooms and special needs that can be set up on request. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts on our property. Happy travels!
