I found myself in Paradise, MI a few nights ago having grossly over anticipated not only the area but its lodging options. Needing a place quick, I pulled into Vagabond Motel.
The owner was very upfront and honest in stating that the room would be $40/night but would NOT have air conditioning. I figured this would be alright, despite the freak heat-wave going through upper Michigan that night.
The room was not the worse place I've stayed, but far from the best. The furniture has clearly seen better days, and the beds were somewhat small. Being an older place, there also seemed to be a shortage of power outlets in the room and a few extension cords in use for the TV, fridge, fan etc. The musty smell that other reviews describe is there, be advised.
My only real problem here lay in the shower (note: shower, not bathtub/shower). There was plentiful hot water, but low water pressure and I think this had to do with the rusty shower heads. These, I think, could be quickly, easily and cheaply replaced.
The motel does have free, fast Wifi -somewhat out of place in an otherwise dated establishment. The owners will cheerfully offer you the password upon check-in.
If you find yourself in Paradise/Whitefish Point, this is an option for the night. Don't expect anything terribly grand or comfortable though.
