“What a fantastic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2008

We are a family of 8 (Mother, Father, 2 sisters and their 4 Children). We booked into a chateau for 3 nights but our booking was cancelled a week before our stay was due to start. Fortunately, the Chateau de Pont-Rilly's Mill was free and was subsequently reserved for us.

We were not dissappointed. As we turned into the drive, we had our first view of the beautiful Chateau. The Mill is a seperate building with lovely views of the chateau. It has been restored by Jean-Jacques and Annick to a very high standard. The rooms were immaculate, with fresh, white linen on the beds and lovely soft furnishings. The rooms are large and accommodated 8 easily in luxury. When it rained, Annick arrived to build us a fire in the kitchen/diner; what a treat. The children were enchanted with the animals on the estate; donkeys, sheep, very friendly pigmy goats, peacocks, chickens, water voles and a black swan. We were invited to explore the estate at our leisure and could have spent many hours in the woods, but the weather spoilt those plans.

Breakfast was taken in a downstairs room in the chateau. Again, we had a real, roaring fire. We were treated to yoghurt, jams, marmalade, all homemade; and muesli, bread, croisants and bowls of fruit. All washed down with real coffee, and home made tea bags.

Annick was happy to recommend various restaurants for our evening meal and these were enjoyed by all of us, as we sampled local produce. There is much to see in the area, with ww2 landing beaches, Bayeaux, and assorted, lovely, little fishing villages.

Jean-Jacques gave us a tour of the chateau that he has lovingly restored with Annicks interior designing assistance. He is very proud of their achievements, and rightfully so. He was in the process of finishing the restoration of the Coach House which has been transformed into another beautiful gite.

We cannot wait to return and would not hesitate to recommend this property to others.

Just returned from a four day break at the Chateau Pont-Rilly with M & M Roucheray. We were let down by our original booking who had problems with the French Authorities and they booked this as a replacement. Whilst not the Chateau experience we originally wanted, we were booked into the Mill House a little distance away from the main building, it was by no means the short straw. The accommodation was of the very highest standard beautifully clean with furnishings and decoration that you see in interior magazines. The Mill House by its very nature is situated by a mill stream with enclosed grassed courtyard to the rear. There were eight of us in total, myself and my two children 11 - 15yrs, my sister with her two children 10 - 13 yrs and our elderly parents. There was a ground floor bedroom with en-suite for my parents, a double room, a twin room and upstairs day bed for five of us and the library with daybed for the other. There was plenty of room with every mod con catered for, cooker, dishwasher and even a washing machine. The kids had fantastic time talking to the animals nearby. We took breakfast at the chateau every monrning with Madame providing fare all made on the premises, jam, museli, bread and yoghurt all made by herself and of an excellent standard. The location was very well placed as a base to explore the local area with easy travel to all the major attractions. Nothing was too much trouble and we even had a guided tour of the chateau itself by M Roucheray which contains many antiques and paintings he has restored, this was the exception not the rule however showed the friendliness of the patron. I do not usually wax lyrical about places I have stayed but could not possibly fault the location, accommodation or welcome extended. I cant wait to go again.
