“The pits.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2009

I am going to keep my review short. My wife and I stayed at this hotel earlier in the year, we were visiting family in Brittany and we left the kids with the grandparents and thought we would escape for a night.

The hotel was quiet, as in nobody staying. At first this seemed a good thing, but it soon became apparent why that was.

I have never written an official complaint to a hotel before, but I did after this stay. I then had to write to them again to ask if they got th efirst complaint. They confirmed they did. What was in the complaint?

Well, we arrived and could not check in, the room was not ready. There was nobody else staying, but the room was not ready. We had booked in to the Spa. However someone had called in ill, so that had to be rearranged. We suspected that the "illness" was more to do with the lack of customers. The spa itself was laughable. You sit in a bath with a few bubbles and a couple of flashing lights. Amazing. The dinner was of a very poor standard, but compared to the service it was incredible. I can not describe how bad the service and attitude was, they were cleaing up around our table at 21.45. We were, obviously, the only people in the restaurant. The problems got worse in the morning. 09.30, having a peacful breakfast ejoying the view, the local handyman then decided it was a good time to get on a ride on mower! We rang reception and asked if it was possible to stop the mowing whilst we finished breakfast. We were tod that was not possible. We left. We will never return and we would never recommend it. Really, this was the most terrible place we have ever stayed.

Having sampled what are regarded a s leading hotels around the world we thought that the description of this hotel matched what we needed for a break closer to home. Positives are that it is in a very nice position (if not quite 'stunning'), the food is very good, although breakfasts lack variety over the week. On arrival we were shown to a terrace room with the sea view we had requested. The terrace was 'weathered' as were the loungers (without cushions); the sea view was a splendid view of the swimming pool roof. We were moved, very grudgingly to a slightly better view. At 333 euros per night we found the room to be just adequate although the bathroom was small and poorly finished. (The L'Occitane treatments advertised weren't there but replaced by cheap shower gel and shampoos!). There has been some good thought put into the New England styling but it has all been carried out shoddily. It would have been nice to have used the full wardrobe but the bedside cabinet prevented the door opening. The service in the restaurant was appalling. It was 25 minutes before anyine took notice of us. The arrogance of the waiter became quite amusing by the end of the week - but did take some of the impact away from the very good food. We booked 5 treatments each in the spa during the week. These were OK and the treatment rooms were new and quite good - but there was no relaxation area after the treatments and the gym that was advertised was a single multi-gym piece of equipment in the corner of the pool - so overall substandard. Overall this was a very disappointing stay -so if you do book , be prepared for an arrogant manner from most of the staff (if not all) and a hotel trying to box above its weight.

We were touring Brittany last week and thought we would treat ourselves to one night of luxury as expressed on the website. On arrival the gates were shut so I had to get out of the car, open them, drive through and then close them again - not the best of welcomes!
The Hotel was quite run down and frankly needs a fortune thown at it to bring it up to 2009. The room (a Sea View) was OK but the water in the bathroom was just warm enough for a cool shower. We were told that it had been refurbished 12 years ago but quite frankly the corridors were dull and uninspiring and when they last painted the place - even the last few times- they just put paint on more paint and it looked like a really rough job, so mush so that the beautiful windows in the dining room were painted shut! A lot of the walls in the bedroom and pillars in the dining room were covered in a mock tongue & groove board which look terrible (maybe a job lot from Mr Briccolage) I know it is a time of environmental economy but all the corridor lighting was on a timer and you had to hunt round for switches at every corner - surely a motion sensor is as cheap! The food also was acceptable but having paid 305 euros for in night I expect a lot more - a first class hotel in London would cost you less! Don't get me wrong - the location was beautiful but the Hotel was to say the least scruffy and the staff were not too helpful either. To be honest it needs to be gutted and redone 2009 style - I know it costs money but I cannot see how it will survive in it's current form. I certainly would not reccomend it and will not be returning unless they tell me it has be completely redone. Such a shame.

Pleasant hotel located in tiny Locquirec. Stunning location with gorgeous views of the sea. Stayed for two nights.

We had a good sized room with a sea view and small balcony. The style of the room was fairly contemporary although the bath room could have done with some refurbishment.

Food in the hotel was good and the dining room is pleasant with great views. We also ate at the hotel's brasserie in Locquirec which was excellent.

Staff were friendly and helpful - recommended walks and made a restaurant booking for us.

Locquirec is a lovely place and I'd recommend the hotel. Don't however, expect lots of restaurants and nightlife! The village is very quiet and clientele ay the hotel are generally older.

My husband and I spent 4 nights in the Hotel after reading good reviews. We were disappointed. The location is wonderful but the room was tiny - the door into the room hit the bed and we had to enter the room individually! We paid 219 euros a night for B&B so it was, in my opinion rather overpriced. The staff were reserved and our service lacked any warmth or welcoming feel. The hotel offers little in terms of services - no lunch, limited bar, none of the services that you would expect of a hotel at this price. There is a pool, the two pieces of gym equipment were out of service, the "spa" was a few treatment rooms at the back of the pool area and the steam room wasn't working. The building is very old, dating back to the beginning of the last century, we could hear the people in the room above us walking around, and in the corridor outside. The bathroom was scruffy, with lino on the floor and poor lighting. If it hadn't been for the beautiful location - right on the beach in a pretty seaside village - we would have probably cut our trip short and moved hotels. Families with children are made to eat in a separate dining room at 7.30pm. Older guests looking for complete peace and quiet would probably enjoy here but we were bored and disappointed and did not feel it was value for money.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Des Bains for four nights at the end of August. We had two double rooms at 295 euros per night dinner bed and breakfast for each room.
The morning we arrived at 8.30am having got off the overnight ferry from Plymouth. When we entered the town the road to our hotel was closed as it was market day. The Hotel knew we were arriving on market day and had not informed us before hand. At reception they told us that our room would not be ready until 1 or 2 pm but we could leave our cases behind reception till then. There was no offer of tea or coffee, or advice on what we could do until our room was ready.
Our room was very large and light. We were paying for a seaview which was a bit obscured by the roof of the swimming pool below. Our 21 and 16 year old children had a smaller room but was adequate size. Both rooms had quite cheap furniture and the bathrooms need a makeover. The toiletries were minimal - in fact we got more Occitane toiliteries in our deluxe cabin on Brittany ferries on the crossing over. The immpression we got was that as little money as possible had been spent on the furnishing the rooms. I had to get housekeeing up to the room to remove the mattress cover which needed washed as it was covered with human hair. The housekeeper said it was difficult to get rid of the hair in the wash but the next night I saw the cover had been returned and was hair free.

The swimming pool also looked as if it needed a makeover. The dining room and recetion areas were very comfortable and the set meal in the evening was very good. Most of the staff were unfriendly and there was an atmosphere of snobbery. The prices of drinks were 11 euros for a gin and tonic and 25 euros for a basic bottle of wine.

Overall I feel we were being ripped off big style. I do not mind paying for quality but this certainly was not the case here.

Stayed here for 3 nights for a treat, and it was a blast - grounds are beautiful (helped by some rare sunshine), room was comfortable and well equipped (wonderful sea view), and food was sensational. Had a fantastic cold supper in our room when we arrived after restaurant was closed, and other dinners were equally memorable. Staff friendly and obliging. Docked one star because of price and a feeling that perhaps it isn't quite as special as they tell you it is, but recommended if you can afford it - or even if you can't and save up like me!
