“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

My husband and I spent the first few days of our honeymoon in Blaye for some wine education and tasting. We had such a wonderful time staying here. Our first night we attended Les's wine debunking class and it was great. Les is very knowledgeable about wine and Bordeaux, so we learned a good deal from him, but it is his laid back, friendly personality that made the class so much fun. The second day we booked a tour through the Villa to the Medoc region with Thomas (our guide). We got to visit a few chateaux, learned a lot, and got to taste some nice bordeaux wine. It was really well done. The Villa itself is completely charming and cozy. The rooms are beautiful (we stayed in Rouselle). The breakfast is simple but delicious and really hits the spot. The location is good, close to some really nice restaurants, and the ferry that takes you across the Gironde is a quick walk away. Also very close to the Citadel, which is a nice place to visit to learn some Blaye history or have a picnic. If we ever get a chance to go back to Blaye, I would definitely stay here again. The owners and staff are so warm and welcoming. By the time we left they felt more like friends. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Bordeaux.

A jewel hidden away in the Bordeaux region.....
Tastefully decorated, laid back hosts, far from the madding crowd.
Great location for the Gironde, lots of in house education on wine on offer and a pleasant "local" French to wn to hang out in with the locals.

Room Tip: Le Cone at the top is great

If you like your hotel rooms to be predictable, to have Sky as standard and air conditioning and have no character whatsoever, then don't read anymore of this review!
This was our first visit to the Bordeaux region and we had planned our trip quite last minute so had expected to find most places fully booked. We came across this little gem quite by accident during an internet search, liked what we read and, after reading the other reviews, emailed for availability. The villa is a restored property, full of character in the vibrant town of Blaye. Each of the rooms (from what we could see when we poked our noses round the other doors!) are individual, our room was comfortable and reasonably spacious - perfect for the 4 nights we stayed! The bathroom was a little cosy and it could sometimes be a bit noisy at night on the streets and you need to keep your windows slightly open because of the heat, however these were very minor issues and did not detract from the overall stay. From the moment we arrived and were met by Clarissa, it felt as though we were staying at a friend's house. Clarissa and Les were so welcoming and were full of invaluable information about where to visit, what to do etc. Breakfast is an optional extra and the small dining room is packed full of pictures, wines, books (mostly on wine admittedly) all of which you are welcome to browse, the wine is available for you to buy on an honesty basis and is very reasonably priced. What was lovely (apart from the fresh croissants every morning..) was the fact that there are only 3 tables so sometimes you get to sit with the other residents and chat, so it can be quite a sociable start to the day. We also did not realise until we arrived that there is a small kitchen with a dining area just on the landing; when it is not being used for breakfast service, as residents, you are welcome to use this facility to make hot drinks, store items in the fridge and even use the cooking facilities if you don't want to eat out.

We must also mention La Galeria which is also owned by Les and is an art gallery cum tapas cum wine bar! Alison, Thomas and Gary welcomed us in and we enjoyed the atmosphere and company so much, we kept going back each day for either food, wine or post-dinner coffees and a chat! It is well worth booking the wine debunking one evening - whether you know something about wine or nothing at all, Les and Thomas are so knowledgeable and passionate about their subject that you can learn from them and of course, get to taste some great wines...! Also, if you have chance and love wine, do book on at least one of the wine tours, you simply would not get to taste some of these wines and get to meet the people who make them otherwise.

So we have "gone on a bit" you might think and you are probably bored of reading by now but we enjoyed ourselves immensely and met some wonderful people, we will definitely return!

We were a group of three couples who were recommed by the owner of our accomodation to visit Les for a wine tour. When we arrived we were immediately impressed by the welcome we received (some of the hotel guests were finishing their breakfast which looked lovely). Les took us to a vineyard close to Blaye, he was extremely knowledgeable and informative with a great touch of humour. All of our party had a great morning and it was one of the highlights of our holiday.
We did the half day wine tour and were heading on to Bordeaux for the afternoon. Les and Clarissa recommended places to visit, eat -even where to park! He also put us in touch with a Cognac distillery that we visited the following day- which we loved! Even though we didn't stay at Villa St. Simon I wanted to write this review as we had such a great half day and his recommendations helped to make our holiday.

A wonderful return to the old Villa. A couple of new faces add to the experience but the same warm and friendly welcome, same generosity and same great atmosphere.
This really is the place to stay if a visit to the region is planned. In the heart of the right bank of the wine region, not far from St Emilion or Bordeaux, within easy reach of many of the top local châteaux. You can make the most of Les's and Thomas's expertise, visit the châteaux, complete a wine tasting course and at all times make the most of some of the most friendly, kind and considerate hosts ever. Many thanks for making our time in Blaye even better guys, we look forward to visiting you again soon.

Room Tip: The older part of the villa is just that, enjoy the traditional old French town house for what it is...

We stayed at Villa St Simon for 4 nights. It is such a lovely place to stay, very relaxing. Les, Clarissa, Thomas and Julian are great hosts, nothihng is too much trouble. Les and Clarissa's advise on where too go and what too see was invaluable. The wine de-bunking with Thomas is a must, so informative. The rooms are lovely, we were at the top of the house so lots of stairs, but worth it, and it keeps you fit!
We would highly recommend staying here.

My best friend and I spent five-and-a-half amazing days at Villa St. Simon, and we couldn't have been happier with the accommodations or the high-end hospitality we received. Les, Clarissa, Jules, Thomas and Allison each went out of their way to create for us the perfect holiday. The moment we arrived at the Bordeaux airport baggage claim we were met by Julien, and his outgoing personality and terrific sense of humor entertained us all the way back to the Villa. From that point forward we felt welcomed and pampered. The staff at St. Simon could not have been any more friendly, knowledgeable or accommodating. The French pastry is to die for...made fresh every morning by the local baker. Les and Thomas' wine knowledge is amazing. We learned tons! We are so grateful to our new friends at Villa St. Simon for making our first trip to Bordeaux as special and memorable as it could possible have been.
