3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2010

No doubt a historically significant and beautiful example of Colonial Spanish architecture. Lovely courtyard and nice rooms. However, electricity is expensive in Nica
and is actually priced higher for commercial operations depending on location. Overly apparent that management has given the word on turning off lights and fans. Even courtyard fountain pump is cut off after breakfast. Vacant room doors are opened during
day light hours to provide some light to interior hallways and they are still too dark.
A 16th century building does not require 16th century lighting.

An energy tip: Cease with the large electric tile floor buffer and the dry scottbite wash pad - - it's only spreading the dust around and wasting significant electricity.

Worth the trip but take a latern.

I stayed here on my second night in Nicaragua and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The staff was friendly and attentive, the garden was beautiful and the room was comfortable and clean.

Stayed three nights. The garden is beautiful and my room was comfortable and quiet. the staff was genuine and professional. In my room the air conditioning was up to the job. The bathroom reminded me of ten years ago, with shakey but functional features and lots of stucco. The Internet barely worked, but this is Leon, Nicaragua. Most Americans and Europeans would be very happy here. Rooms 25-30 face the garden, 1-5 face the street. Choose garden if you can.

I stayed at El Convento in late February 2010 with a small tour group of 8 people. Safe to say we were all delighted with our 2-night stay. The staff is friendlly and very helpful! The hotel has a lovely garden full of bougainvilla and other flowers, manicured hedges and a fountain in the center. Rooms are arranged along the corridors along the courtyard. The coridors are lined with museum-quality antiques (the same company owns a nearby museum and art gallery). Rooms were large and comfortable with free wireless internet available. The small restaurant on-site was good value.

Spent two nights here. The former Convent is situated around a garden which is beautiful and the location is Leon is excellent. Rooms are adequate but the beds are very comfortable. Decent breakfast with good coffee and fresh juices. Restaurant is quite pricey but the food is good. Va Pues tours. a couple of blocks from the hotel, organised a trip for us which was excellent. We also ate in Mediteraneo which was excellent and La Perla, another hotel.

We stayed here for three nights and I'd definitely return. The rooms and dining area are situated around a central garden and it's quite beautiful. It used to be a convent and care has been taken to reflect the age of the building with the furniture chosen and decoration. I just loved the atmosphere.

Staff were always responsive and friendly and breakfasts were good. It's difficult to know what else to say except that it was so brilliant to find a hotel that reflected Nicaragua and wasn't just a stereotype of hotels at home. It doesn't have a pool but it's 'difference' was more important to me than finding a hotel pool which you can find any time in most places. .

It's very easy to arrange day trips to the beach area and nearby volcanoes as there is an excellent tour company just around the corner (easily within walking distance) called Va Pues Tours Operaciones. They arranged a couple of tours for us and were very efficient.

I'd thoroughly recommend this hotel if you want accommodation which reflects Nicaragua, safe, beautiful and different.

No, I did NOT stay at the El Convento Hotel .

I went there only to check the BREAKFAST.

I was there January 8, 2010 to test the waters .

It is a SELF-SERVICE breakfast witn a male attendant to provide the cutlery and pour the coffee at your pleasure.

It consisted of UNLIMITED scrambled eggs , fried ripe bananas ( maduros, in spanish),
unlimited pineapple juice, sliced papayas and regular coffee with milk if you so desire.

The cost : 7.50 U.S. dollars with a 10% tip included for the male attendant service.

I was there around 8: 30 a.m. and no more than 14 people were present.

The table seating overlooks an approximately 400 square feet garden with red flowers and green leaves. Very peaceful and quiet.

I cannot rate the hotel itself but I can guarantee the attendant was attentive .
