Owner description: Hokano Adventures is a grassroots tour operator specializing in authentic off-the-beaten track adventures throughout Nicaragua. All our adventures are led by local bilingual guides. All our tours are designed to give you an exceptional inside experience of the people, culture, traditions and landscapes of this country. Many of our tours take you right into the homes of local artists where you can watch or learn hands on traditional art forms or cuisine. We also offer customized tour packages, allowing you to design your own adventure or itinerary. All of our adventures focus of giving you the most amazing experience of Nicaragua while at the same helping support the local community. For every tour you take a percent of all our profits go directly towards the non-profit community projects that we support as part of Foundación Hokano. We work with local poor people to empower them to get involved in tourism for better life conditions and teaching them to protect the environment around them. Tours range from volcano hikes, islands, lakes and beaches, visits to local artists and artisans in which you are invited to learn hands on traditional art forms such as primitivism painting, guitar making, sawdust carpets and ceramic sculpting. An important initiative we have is voluntourism: We believe it is an important part of making tourism more sustainable, that it provides travellers and communities a way to connect, to learn, to appreciate each other's cultures, and work towards a better future. Our Voluntours provide opportunities for travellers to engage in community projects that are working on health, education, conservation and small business opportunities around.

I highly recommend Hokano Adventures for three reasons: 1) They offer unique and authentic Nicaraguan experiences; 2) the guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and polite; and 3) they are one of few Nicaraguan-owned tour companies in the area. In addition, I found the prices to be quite reasonable.

I have had experiences with Hokano on a couple of occasions. First, I went with some colleagues to Lake Asososca, which involved a brief (20-minute) hike over lovely terrain. The lake was calm, peaceful, and beautiful. We swam and relaxed; on the way back Hokano treated us to some fantastic local food. Another time, I took a city tour of Leon with Hokano, during which I learned historical and cultural facts about Leon. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The guides have a great deal of passion for their city.

One thing that is important to understand about Nicaragua is that things don't operate there the way they do in the US (I'm an American). The key to having a good time in Nicaragua is having realistic expectations. It can be a challenging place at times, but it will also touch your soul, if you let it.

“telica tour at night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

the tour itself was really amazing - seeing lava by night and walking down in the dark. our guide carlos in fact wasnt really eager on sharing information with us, as he didnt talk really much. he didnt even tell his name in the beginning (no joke). so we were kind of disappoited. if we asked questions he often just answered in spanish (which the rest of the group mostly spoke) or said "the lava" (whatever the question was).
Maybe he just had a bad day, the sight of the lava made up for it...

“Best Day Exploring Nicaragua”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

Look no further for a tour company. I booked tour boarding ahead of time with two different companies, and both cancelled without any warning.
The hostel was kind enough to call Hokano Adventures for us. "It's new, so we're not sure how it will be..." With only one day in Leon to explore, we figured it was worth a shot...and we ended up having spending the best day of our trip hiking up and boarding down Cerro Negro with Carlos as our guide.
Not only is Carlos passionate and knowledgable about his country: he is a genuinely kind-hearted, cool person. He's the type of local with a tale that will linger with you even more strongly than the tour itself.
Carlos picked us up at our hostel in his all-terrain jeep, and first drove us past fields of crops and ashen trees (singed by acid rain) to the iguana conservatory at the Cerro Negro park entrance. While he is unsure about the true motivations of the iguana owners (he believes that they may be selling most of the eggs on the black market), he let us explore a bit, and even captured an iguana for us to hold. Because of his extra effort to reel in the reptile, we got some of the best shots of the day each holding a huge iguana in our hands. (No animals were harmed in the making of the production...no worries :))
We proceeded on to Cerro Negro, and hiked up to the summit with our strips of plywood and metal for volcano boarding. While the hike was steep, it was pleasant, and the views of the pitch-black ash made it feel like we were walking on the moon. Carlos talked all the while in-depth about the politics, history, and culture of his country. He is a single, hard-working father who enjoys painting, taught himself to build his own website, and he has even started a volunteer-based English program in his community.
We proceeded to hike past a still-steaming crater, and though it started to rain and thunder, we still trudged onward to the top. I was quite terrified by the lightning, but he coached us in perfect English through the best technique to have the fastest, thrilling, safest ride down.
It was probably my favorite day in Nicaragua, and Carlos made it truly unique for us. I would reccomend Hokano Adventures, 100%, above any other tour company.

“True Passion for Nicaragua”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

After moving to Nicaragua and opening a small place of my own, we began to seek out a depandable tour company to send our guests. After meeting Carlos I knew I had found someone with true passion for his country. His knowledge and overall beautiful energy makes every tour persoanabe and informative. English speaking staff who meet the expectations of Carlos has been a small growing pain of opening Hokano Adventures. I can assure you he has taken action on all negative feedback, he makes every effort to employ honest, warm hearted, educated Nicas. From volcano boarding to rum tasting challenge ( which I LOVE, and have done 3 times ) to personal private tours of this beautiful country, Honkano is the way to go. Cheers Carlos on your growing success !

“Rum Tasting!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

Love Flor De Cana Rum and Carlos offered to give our tour of 6 people a tasting
Not only the history but some drinking games as well
We started with the 18 yr old ...smooth
ended with the 'Plata' brand and mixers.
About 20 full shots later and 2 large platters of food we were feeling great.

It was about $25 a head and changers depending on numbers.
Totally worth the experience Held inn the rear of the VIA VIA bar.
