I hate giving bad reviews, because it can do so much damage to a business, but I was really disappointed with El Albergue from the start. There is one guy who seems to run it - Jose who is pretty good, really friendly and helpful but the rest of the staff are super dopey and don't seem to care. We arrived on a Saturday, so Sunday morning was a bit slow, breakfast started at 9am instead of 8am which is cool but we couldn't leave because the door was locked and the guy was asleep. This is all ok, except that that night a big group of (local?) guys checked in and made SO MUCH NOISE all night, still up at 3am in their dorm playing music without any consideration, and the guy staying overnight on the door did not care. So no sleep, but giving them the benefit of the doubt we pushed through the lack of sleep and super late breakfast because Jose was so nice. Instead of leaving we stayed 4 more nights which were broken up because we had an overnight trek or two. Jose was great, we paid, left and he booked us in for the night we got back from our trek. All was sweet, we checked back in, got our stuff (they looked after it for free) and slept well. We had a second trek booked so we paid up and reserved the same room for when we returned, but it was a different guy and he forgot/failed to write it down, so when we returned, super sweaty, tired and wiped he said, without any apology, that our room was taken and they had nothing. Cool story. It's ok because Leon has a lot of hostels, but we had definately booked, it was confirmed and we really needed to just crash but had to find another hostel instead.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Lonely Planet says about: Hostal of Albergue is a hostel in León-Nicaragua offering a tranquil and genuine Nicaraguense environment. Really, really great hostel! It is the only backpacker place with a complete Nica staff & Nicaraguan ownership that I have found in León. They have all the services that foreigners expect, and in addition all the local knowledge about culture, politics, etc. that most other places cannot provide. The entire staff is extremely knowledgeable and very interested in conversing about both Nicaraguan realities and eager to learn about the rest of the world. I'm really glad I stayed at the Albergue!
