“Hostel occupied by Sonati staff/volunteers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

If you are looking for an inexpensive, decent accommodation the hostel is the right choice. Down side - at the time of my stay: the Sonati staff/volunteers had fully occupied the place and made others feel like undesired intruders. No big deal, just walk around the corner and hang around with friendly travel folks at the bars of other hostels. Really negative: promoted day tours finally did not take place. Explanation: "We have own staff participating and would need more regular payers to finance the trips." At least they were honest... My advice: book your tours straight away at one of the real tour operators in town. Last: There is no bar or snack service at the Sonati. In the kitchen one had to pack everything very well because of the ants. Anyway the staff will throw away your food after three days in the fridge or cabinet as a standard rule. Overall the hostel offers simple, plain accommodation. Guess it makes more fun if you come with your own friends to hang around in the yard.

Sure it's a little grungy, but what do you expect at this price-point? I really liked this hostel. The workers were really fun and friendly and informed and that's what you want when you're backpacking around. It's a good place to meet other travels and hang out. There was a cute little cat when I was there too.

So we stayed here after we stayed at the hostel sonati in Esteli. This was a big downgrade to be honest. We had the private room with private bath since nothing else was available we took the room. Though the room was decent but not worth $20 compared to other places we have stayed at during our trip through central america so for. We also tried to book a tour through the hostel and they didnt really try and make it to happen after waiting over 24 hours for a confirmation if the tour is going to happend or not they still havnt tried and make it happen. As we were there for 4 days and the volcano boarding tour only go certain days we went straight to the quetzal trekkers and within 5 minutes our tour for volcano boarding the next day was booked with a great service. The laundry service was a bit overpriced and we recommend to go to laundry express around the corner which offer cheaper deals where they wont let your clothes, lay wet in a box and wait for you to hang it for 180 cordobas. Staff/volunters who worked were always hanging around in the chillout area so there were no real private space at any time except very early in the morning. They make you feel like you are imposing in their space and they werent very welcoming. The pillows and beds werent that great. Overall a lot of small issues comparing with other hostels for the price of $20. Note: There were some staff that was very friendly and helpful. The cleaing lady that works there fulltime always put a smile to your face!

The private room with shared bathroom was very good for the price. Room was clean and quiet. The bathroom left a little to be desired, but with no window or ventilation I can see why. The real highlight was the volcano boarding tour we did with Renee. She really took the time to explain what we were seeing and the science behind it. The boarding at the end just felt like a bonus to a really great and informative hike. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Sonati hosted myself, daughter and friend on this tour. Soooooo fun. Everything was handled completely professionally and went off without a hitch. The guide was knowledgeable and very friendly. The equipment worked great. The hike up offered some stunning visual beauty. The trip down was over too soon, but such a kick! Gotta do it.

For a "new" place in Leon the hostel already looks tired and grubby. Some of the staff are a bit hit and miss (maybe as they appear to be temporary/volunteers?).

The hostel is split into 2 with rooms in a building across the street looking onto a corridor. The "windows" onto the corridor are adjustable glass which is easy to slide out, so they aren't very secure.

Room Tip: Try to stay in the main hostel building where rooms look onto a nice courtyard with chairs/hammocks...

The price that you get in this Hostel for a private room with bathroom you just cannot beat. The staff is very helpful; they make sure that you enjoy your stay in Leon. I also strongly recommend that you arrange trekking/tours through them. If I was to rate this Hostel by the value it would have definitely been an "excellent" rating.
