“Cleanest guest house with water supply.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2012

In under-developed Halesi, having accommodation with clean sanitary facilities is hard to come by and there are not many options to pick from, especially only pilgrimages who are willing to travel in some form of hardship manner to this place (Helicopter ride excluded of course) come here to visit Maratika caves where Amitayus Bodhisattva, Guru Padmasambhava and Princess Mandarava were here before.

We were so relieved to finally found a decent and clean toilet at this guest house after going around to check out other available options with our guide. Most either had faeces piling up or bad urine smell. Our guide told us that it is difficult to find a guest house with clean toilet when water supply is scarce and inaccessible in small village area, Halesi.

The owner of this guest house, Dewan Singh Rai([--]), actually said that his guest house doesn't have a name. He would get up early in the morning to fetch water on his back from the foothill and tread back up the hill where his guest house is located. Such scene is common in Halesi and therefore it is not possible to have showers in the guest house but simply use the water for brushing teeth and washing face. For showers, people would usually go down to a spring water moat behind the hill where Maratika Monastery is located. As it is a public place, people shower with their clothes on.

The owner has been very diligent in keeping the guest house clean for guests although it was just a simple room with raw wooden board beds with thin mattresses and a light bulb. It can be considered the best guest house in Halesi at the moment. As it was a small village, location was not an issue to walk to all the caves and monastery in less than 10 minutes.

I am unsure of the price that was paid as it was covered in my package and it has the flexibility of allowing us to choose which accommodation we prefer. But Halesi, being an under-developed place and only with really simple accommodation available, the guide gave an idea that it was not more than US$20 per night.
