“Not the best Choice”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

Spent one night at the hotel in mid-January. The generator was below our room and ran for hours and hours at a time. The noise completely did my head in. It kicked on in the early morning hours and drove me nuts. Also, the generator powered everything from the tv to the outlets, which is really just a waste of energy. In Nepal we all learn to live without power a little. They should definitely invest in some clean solar energy or an inverter and power just the lights. Also, for some reason the generator didn't power the water pump and we were without water most of the morning. (A time you really need to flush the toliet.) We were told there was a hot shower but at the three times I checked it was ice cold for minutes and minutes. Staff was ok, not really friendly but also not rude. You get the feeling they aren't really bothered at all that you are staying there. The room seemed nice enough but in the middle of the night we did have a problem with bug bites from the bed or blanket. And the toilet made all these crazy noises. We checked out first thing in the morning and found a different hotel. My suggestion to them is to have a top sheet or duvet over the blankets so you can maintain more cleanliness and ditch the generator!

Room Tip: Find out where the generator is and get a room on the other side of the hotel, and check yourself fo...

We stayed at this guesthouse for two nights. We took an AC room but the AC didn't work so we switched room to one where it did work. The room was clean, the mattress was new and the bedding was clean. The wifi did not work. There was hot water one morning, but the rest of the time it was cold. The staff were friendly. It was average. The location was good, right in the center and walking distance to the sights.

We booked a room at mayadevi for 2 days during early september when its extremely hot and dry. Before checking in, the manager confirmed they have a generator which would be used in case there is a power cut. 2 hours later when we had a powercut, manager refused to turn it on and rudely said generator is used only during nights. All you get is a wicked smile, when asked why they lied to us in the first place.. :) Thought this might have been a mis-communication and moved on.

Next day, we asked the manager on how one could get back from Lumbini to Kathmandu. We were told there is "only one" bus available (sakhura travels @750 Rs and non-ac) at 6:30am and nothing else. We were very explicit and asked them to not mislead us like it happened with the generator. The manager and the tall staff person (doubles as a cook too) promised us this is the only one in all of lumbini and the other option is to go to Bhairawa bus terminus. We booked 2 tickets for the next day. Later in the evening, we were talking to one of the grocery store shopkeepers who indicated that there is a AC bus @700 Rs available on alternate days between Lumbini and Kathmandu and one is available the next day when we had planned to travel. Given the weather, we booked the AC bus, went back to the hotel and asked the manager to cancel the ticket. This is when the unethical behavior reached a new level.

1. He said tickets should be cancelled within one hour of booking. Luckily it was within one hour. He said he was busy and cant cancel it with in the next hour or so and we were expected to forfeit the total amount.

2. After more arguments, he said he will talk to the bus owner. He called up someone and came back saying AC bus is available with Sakura travels the next day and we can take that up. I asked him why he didnt mention it earlier when we asked. No response except that we atleast pay a penalty of 700 Rs if we dont book a ticket through him. Clearly a case of commission for him.

3. Finally, we asked to talk to the bus owner regarding the penalty and he refused to give us the number. We bargained for 200Rs cancellation charges which we were fully aware was his commission - the only thing he was concerned about.

Lumbini is supposedly a sacred place and by far, these people were the worst cheats we have met in our life. No ethics, pathetic lies to get money whichever way they could.

There is a simple hotel right next door (Lumbini garden lodge??) which is budget but infinitely better than this place.

Good things about this place - reasonably clean compared to others in the neighbourhood, close to the entrance. Just about everything else is bad.

In general, dont ask any of the hotel staff for tickets. I got the sense that majority of them are out there to make money whichever way the could and the worst among them is the manager at mayadevi. There is a travel agency right opposite the mayadevi temple entrance who were much more helpful and didnt mislead us. The bus was also infinitely better than sakura travels.

For some reason, majority of the lodges promote only sakura whose buses are inferior to the ones we travelled and also more expensive. Later we found out the nexus and the additional charges are actually commission for these guys. 250 commission for a 500 Rs ticket - nice deal.

PS : There is a small vegetarian joint right near the bus park and the ticket counter that serves simple and delicious food - a rarity in lumbini that we stumbled upon by chance.

Myself and my boyfriend recently stayed here during our stay in Lumbini. Our room was a standard fan room, it had a huge double bed and hot and cold shower so we were quite happy. It did get tough on our last night as the electricity went off during the night so I woke up sweating and couldn't really sleep because of it. But this is not the fault of the guesthouse, this has happened to us throughout our stay in Nepal and is just a way of life there.

My boyfriend did say that it got quite noisy in the mornings, but I had ear plugs so didn't hear a thing. The owner was very nice and helped us with getting a bus to the border the next morning, it was nice because we bought our tickets on the bus, not from him, so he was genuinely being helpful. We would stay here again if we had the chance (just not in the heat of the summer)

Our room, while at first looked clean, it turned out was *not*. The beds were infested with fleas & bedbugs, not to mention countless other winged and terrestrial creatures. We had inspected the beds upon arrival, but for some reason, the infestation didn't ramp up until around 10pm... maybe it was the light that attracted them? or they just woke up for a night of bloodsucking.

After complaining, (and actually showing the infestation to him) the reception guy agreed to move us to another room which was not as bad. The room was about half the size, and with no hot water, but it was 10pm, and he apologized and promised us a 'discount' for our 2 night stay. I should not have taken him at his word, but he seemed sweet and honest... always agree to exact dollar amounts ahead of time i learned! neither of the tv's (in either room) worked, but whatever... we didn't really care about tv anyway, though why they have them if theyre all broken is beyond me.

Long story short, the discount he offered when he rang up the bill was 0% for the first night, and 500rp for the second night (2500 --->2000 rp). I thought that was pretty egregious. we didn't (couldnt) even stay in the first room 1 night and he charged us anyway.

When I complained about the bill and mentioned that there wasn't even any hot water, he now 'denied' that fact, even though it was a fact he had apologized for the night before. Just a total crook.

I seriously thought momentarily about not paying the full bill, but I decided to just pay it and tell the story here...

STAY AWAY!!!!!!! BADDDD!!!!!

p.s. also - re the 'restaurant' - it was a single creepy guy upstairs. the curry was actually tasty, but the portion was put into something more the size of a coffee-cup that a plate or bowl. 3 bites. We would have just ordered more, but it took nnearly an hour to get THAT so we just went to our biscuit stash. the bill for it was expensive too. We learned our lesson and ate the rest of our meals OUT.

Room Tip: The best thing you can do to improve your stay here is to *not stay here*.

The guy at the reception promised us over and over that the generator would provide us with power for the ceiling fan at the very least so we booked two rooms for two nights. On the first night we got food poisoning and on the second night there was no fan so we were forced to sleep outside and were eaten alive by mosquitoes. The two teenaged boys working there would much rather be someplace else and I can see why! A trip to beautiful Lumbini should be fully enjoyed which means allowing enough in your budget to stay in a nice hotel. Stay away from these gritty and grimy mosquito ridden rat trap guest houses.
