“Beautiful Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Painu Maya Resort is a bit far from either of the ferry ports of Iriomote Island, but worth staying. The hotel ground is spacious and you can enjoy a walk in their forest ground. Our room was on a beautiful creek and my mum looked very happy, saying that she would come back there one day. Free wifi is available in the lounge. Unfortunately, you cannot take their hot spring bath any more.

I stayed at this resort for two nights. The resort looks like it was built in the early 80s with cement walls, and linoleum floors in the hotel rooms and with no major remodeling. At JPY 23,700 p.n. (2 persons, exc breakfast), this is very pricey.

Positives:
- Pick up service at Ohara port. They will also drop you along the way if you want to visit the Yubu Island (via buffalo cart) or do river trip on Nakama-gawa.
- Very friendly staff with someone who spoke some English always available.
- Nice indoor/outdoor onsen and large swimming pool which is good especially if you have children.

Negatives:
- Hotel rooms were very basic which is disappointing given the price.

You will probably need a rental car given local bus is infrequent. I would suggest staying only two days/one night on Iriomote unless you are interested in snorkeling/diving. You can do River trip on the Urauchi-gawa and walk to waterfalls of Mariyudo-no-taki and visit Yubu-jima in one day and do 1 day or half day snorkeling trip the next day. The first ferry leaves Ishigaki at 7 am and last ferry from Ohara is 6:20 pm.

I visited this resort one night while in Iriomote-jima. It is always relaxing to spend a night at an onsen resort and after hearing that one was located in Iriomote-jima, of course I had to visit it. Now the resort itself is really nothing special. A typical 3-star Western-style hotel in Japan. The rooms were spacious and had all of the expected amenities, but were in need of a renovation. WLAN was available in the Lobby which is for me a negative. I like staying connected to the internet and not having to leave my room. Dinner and breakfast were of course included in the price, but it was nothing to write home about.
The only thing that made this hotel special was the outdoor onsen. What a treat. I always love soaking in the Japanese-style mineral baths. You usually do 2-3 times soakings in baths of different temperatures. First went outside to soak in some baths after dinner and then went inside to baths inside for my evening bath.
If you are going to visit Iriomote-jima anyway, I recommend staying one night at this hotel or at least visit the onsen baths once. This resort was not good enough to be the sole reason for visiting Iriomote-jima.
