“Looks Nice, very unfriendly”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

The Hotel looks nice from the outside and when we saw the tripadvisor sign on the front desk we thought it would be just the place to sleep over for the night! What a let down when the front desk had the opinionated air of an english butler, but without the obligatory finesse. We had a look around never the less and over tea experienced the same "attitude". We decided not to stay over.

This place looks like a normal hotel from the outside, but it is very nicely decorated inside. The Artist Rooms are amazing! There are books to read, a nice pool, an art gallery, a very friendly cat and breakfast is excellent.
A welcome change from the ordinary.

Room Tip: Ask for the Artist Rooms

Let me start by saying what the disgruntled front desk clerk reminded us - this is a 3 star hotel. Fair enough but the staff could still be friendly and helpful regardless of the rating. There are no hair dryers in the room and only a few at the front desk. I was told that I would have to share it with someone else in the morning and I should have brought my own. My husband asked for an electrical plug converter (North American to South African) and after some discussion was reluctantly provided with one.
The rooms are a reasonable size and clean although the bath tub could use some attention.
The art theme is fun and would be very effective if they got the service essentials right.
On a positive note, the breakfast was good.

If you are going to stay here book the garden room, very nice and if you are driving you have the car exactly nearby. Unfortunately it was raining but no problem they had unbrellas that we could borrow.

Look behind the main street facade of this hotel - it's definitely worth it ! The Graskop Hotel is a very nice hotel which is is full of very pleasant surprises and lots of beautiful art. You can choose between hotel rooms in the main building and bungalow-like cottages which are facing the garden. Our cottage was very spacious with huge glass doors opening to the garden. During warm weather, the large pool in the elevated garden area is a wonderful amenity. The delicious breakfast is served in the main building. The breakfast / dining room is beautifully decorated with wonderful pieces of art.

Room Tip: The cottages are more spacious than the hotel rooms, each with its own parking space in front.

My husband and I spent in January 2013 one night in the Graskop Hotel - and one night was not enough. This was the most wonderful hotel during our 3 week trip though South Africa. This Hotel is full of art and so inspiring that you don't want to leave the hotel. Luckily it was raining cats and dogs when we arrived - so we really could enjoy the hotel ;-) A propos cats: the hotel cats a lovely cat! We booked the Eric Duplan, Phyllis Green & Schalk van Niekerk room and even if the room is right above the kitchen it is wonderful decorated, clean and nice. But next time I would try another room - but for sure one of the Artist rooms. Breakfast is great as well!
100% recommendation for the Graskop hotel - I would stay there again!

With the Graskop hotel, you will most likely pick one of the better places in this town. The rooms are nicely decorated, but starting to get worn down. Walls are pretty thin, windows are only single-glas, not closing very well. As Graskop is very high, it tends to get quite cold there. Heating is not sufficient. No wifi in the rooms. Still good vary for money, but in a bit less touristic locations you might find better experiences.
