“Unbeatable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2014

Make no mistake, getting there isn't easy, it's a long drive, along some rough and remote roads, but so worth it. The location is absolutely awesome, every chalet is perched on the edge of the canyon with views that seem to go on forever. The sunrise and sunsets are something that have to be experienced to be believed.

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, and did I mention that the location is awesome? Rooms are basic, but clean & comfortable and built out of mainly local materials to blend into the environment, I had 2 of the most restful nights of our 11 night road trip here. Power goes off at around 11PM so a torch is a good idea for finding your way around the chalet if needed during the night, it's VERY dark, with only the stars for illumination, but I'm not complaining!

The food was outstanding, I'm amazed that world class dishes can be produced in such a remote place. Everything has to be brought in, the closest town is a couple of hundred Km away, the owners and staff really have done an awesome job.

I can't wait to go again.

Fish River Lodge is a once in a lifetime must do and worth every bumpy kilometer to get there.
The view is spectacular and the hotel design in fitting with the natural beauty, clean lines, unobtrusive and luxurious. The staff are justifyably proud of their hotel and it shows with their passion, attention to detail and their willingness to help, nothing is too much trouble. The food was delicious only outdone by the millions of stars that accompanied us to bed.

Room Tip: Its quite a walk to the "end" rooms and the path is gravel.

The rough road to the lodge is well worth it as the views and stylish design take your breathe away. The welcome was passionate and the rooms spacious and private. The pool was freezing yet we did swim, I suggest they find a way to heat it as it never gets sun. The staff singing was very special. They could do with a proper coffee machine.

Room Tip: Bring walking shoes and binoculars. Beers is cheaper than water here too!

Beautiful setting right on the western rim of the Canyon. Quite hectic roads getting there and make sure you have spare tyres! Staff very friendly and helpful, food very good. Rooms cleans and lovely. Would go back for the tranquility.

We stayed one night at the Fish River Lodge. The drive is very long from the canyon, an additional 240km of unpaved road (make sure you have a 4 by 4 or you will have trouble to access the lodge).

The lodge is wonderful and the view is simply breathtaking.

The staff are very friendly and most speak English, Afrikaans and the local languages. They were very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas.

The chalets are very spacious and set in a way so you have as well a lovely view of the canyon. The bedroom were very large and the bed very comfortable yet they have some issues with the insects infecting the chalets (mosquitos and criquets who can be a pain during the night), make sure you keep the door close at all time and you should be fine. Despite the distance from the first town, they manage to have a very interesting menu and the food was very good.

Room Tip: All the chalets have a magnificient view !

We spent 3 nights at the lodge overlooking the Fish river Canyon with spectacular views and walks from the lodge. For a high-end lodge they catered very well for our children and were willing to go the extra mile for meals for the children even though they have limited options being so far from a town. Their food was great, some dishes were a bit of a miss but overall the food was excellent.

The accommodation layout is very practical and well appointed, the only thing lacking were hooks to hang towels, but that was just a minor thing. The rooms were well taken care of and any issues we had were very quickly addressed by the friendly staff.

The swimming pool is beautifully situated at the main lodge, however it is not heated at all (even with solar heating) and being in the shade was very cold for the time of year we were there. It would benefit from a little solar heating to make it truly spectacular.

Room Tip: All the rooms have full view of the Canyon - any room is great.

We spent two nights at the lodge. The view is unsurpassed, right on the rim of the canyon, quite breathtaking. The room was great, view fantastic, comfortable and spacious. We enjoyed the service which was good without being over the top. Very friendly and helpful staff. We did the hike along the rim of the canyon and this was great too, beautiful views, well marked and laid out path and good walking. They offer a day drive down into the canyon which we did not do as we had driven a lot and 7 hours in a open car seemed a lot. However, it could be spectacular although expensive at N$1,000 per person. The last 20km of road to the lodge is rough but manageable if you take it easy. Food was good. Only other small caveat is that when the wind blows (which it apparently does often), the lodge is very exposed and it canbe rather noisy! Would recommend a stay here.
