Onguma tented camp is located on a private piece of property that is outside but directly adjacent to Etosha National Park. The nearest entrance is a fifteen minute drive to the Namutoni Gate and the commute to the park is an excellent time to spot game. We were welcomed upon our arrival by the managers and introduced to the entire staff. Our service during our stay was absolutely superb. All staff members were friendly, professional, polite and extremely accommodation to our particular needs.
The tents are situated around a private watering hole that hosts a myriad of different species throughout the day and night. We were lucky enough to spot a variety of antelopes, two hyenas, wart hogs and guinea fowl. We only just missed two giraffes that stopped by midday. The main lodge and dining area are open to the air and there are a variety of spots to sit, relax and admire the wild life. The lodge offers free coffee, tea and juice all day and there is afternoon tea provided. After 6:00pm, complimentary sherry and port are served around the campfire. Very decadent! The main lodge also has a small but diverse and lovely selection of gifts to purchase, which was novel amongst the lodges we stayed in on our trip.
Our tent was wonderful - large, clean and equipped with many luxurious amenities, such as robes, a fully stocked wine fridge, an indoor and amazing outdoor shower, and a large bathtub. The tents are not air conditioned, which is not a problem during winter, and fans are provided. We did not have any problems with room temperature during our stay. In the evenings, while you are attending dinner, the staff turn down the bed, place hot water bottles in the sheets and lower the mosquito netting. Prior to sunrise and after sunset, however, you will require an escort to the main lodge from your tent as a precaution against undesired wildlife encounters - there are lions and hyenas about.
The food here is excellent and we enjoyed our dinners very much. We were frequently served Namibian game meat, which was prepared to our liking, and the three to four courses per meal were elegant, delicious and appropriately portioned. There is a nice selection of South African wines as well. Breakfast is served as both a cold continental buffet with hot a la carte options available as well. You may request packed meals if you are up very early or on the road for lunch.
We did partake in a nighttime game drive, which was very fun. These occur on the private property and last about two hours. Temperatures can become very chilly but blankets are provided on the truck. The driver was knowledgeable and happy to stop at any time for us to take pictures. We also opted for a sundowners game drive on a different day, which again happens outside the park but is no less impressive. We very much enjoyed watching the sun set over the savannah and meeting other guests for a chat.
Overall we found our stay at the Onguma tented camp heavenly. It was quiet, private and supremely relaxing. We enjoyed all the amenities, the evening campfires, the afternoon coffee and cake breaks, the dinners, the drives very much and would clearly return here again without question.
