“Great base to explore Etosha”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

We stayed at Mokuti Lodge about 20 years ago, and there is just no comparison with the current edition. Then it was almost a routine hotel with very little atmosphere. Now it reeks of atmosphere, with excellent accomodation, oryx grazing on the lawn, and excellent facilities. The only somewhat downside is the the food is buffet style, and the menu bears a certain sameness. That's not to say it isn't good, they just need to add some variety. The staff is terrific, and work really hard to please. Best of all, it is located right next to the gates to Etosha National Park. And the guides from the lodge do their very best to make sure the visitor maximizes their experience in the park.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We do pride ourselves as one of the older establishments in the area as such receiving feedback from our guests’ that have experienced our product in the latter years is most valuable. We do strive to keep our product current.

We have addressed our food offering by varying the venues and menus on offer dependent on the number of guests’ we have staying with us. For instance we have our Boma where we offer a sumptuous traditional style menu; a la carte dinning is featured in our Rock Room, as well as a stir fry in our Tambuti Restaurant.

We will be sure to pass on your compliments to our guides as well as the rest of our team who strive to make each guest experience one to remember.

We were only able to stay here one night but wished we had been able to stay longer. We stayed in an Etosha suite, these are mini suites with a separate sitting area and a private sitting area outdoors. The food was average and service rather haphazard. There is a reptile park in the grounds which is well worth a visit, the snakes ad crocodile are kept mainly in large very well maintained enclosures.

A beautiful place with very relaxing, tranquil environment. It's a place for the whole family to enjoy; what with a spa, 3 swimming pools including one for children as well, tour-guided game drives, tennis courts and a reptile park. You can also venture into the Etosha in your own car if you do not want the tour-guided drives. Overall the staff are friendly and helpful.

The place is lovely with beautiful surroundings. It's mostly for those who want to relax from their busy noisy towns or cities as well as offering an opportunity to see the wildlife at Etosha park. The family room we used was well decorated, clean and my children loved the shower. They however were not too pleased to find out that their favorite channels (cbeebies and disney junior) were not offered on the TV. Free internet is offered but it was unfortunate that l couldn't access it inside the room, only when l was outside. My wife loved the gym although the amount of equipment is not adequate for the number of guests they had. She found the machines fully occupied on two occasions. The tennis court needs a bit of maintenance but is otherwise usable. The swimming pools were clean considering the number of guests and that it had rained the previous day. The reptile park is a must see and we found it very educative as well. The breakfast is good with wide range of food available. The dinner offered some variety as well including game meat however the food was not very good. The staff is 50-50, the ones who were good were extremely so while others were not so friendly.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us.

We do have a specific bouquet of channels on offer. As we cater to a large demographic of families with the ages of the children being varied it is difficult to cater to a specific sector of the market. As such we currently offer a movie channel which showcases a selection of family movies.

We have recently upgraded our internet accessibility which has improved connectivity to a large extent. Unfortunately the size of our gym does not allow for any more equipment to be placed inside the gym.

However we do take into account your observation and will most definitely bear this in mind should a renovation of our gym be considered. We have noted the concern you addressed with regard to our tennis court and have communicated this to our Maintenance team.

We pride ourselves in aiming to provide a food offering that is varied. We have different venues and menus on offer dependent on the number of guests’ we have staying with us. For instance we have our Boma where we offer a sumptuous traditional style menu; a la carte dinning is featured in our Rock Room, as well as a stir fry or buffet in our Tambuti Restaurant.

Our service ethos is one that aims for efficient and friendly service which unfortunately you did not experience with all the staff you dealt with. We thank you for this feedback and will indeed share this with our staff as a training tool and measure of our achievement in living up to our service ethos.

Kind Regards,

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Good day. My name is Eleni and with my husband visited Namibia last December. On 16/12/2012 we had reservations through booking.com at Hotel Kempinski Mokuti Lodge on the outskirts of the Etosha National Park. The 5-star hotel and the website advertises 5 star quality service and reasonable prices course, apart from the warranty offered by the name Kempinski. Unfortunately things were very different. At 2:00 am on the morning of December 17th, I woke up because of the heat and found that there was neither water nor electricity nor phone. Unable to contact the reception because it was far away and its surroundings circulating animal, wait until 6:00 am to dawn. In a short-term restoration of electrical power was able to call and I was informed by the reception, that up at 10:00am did not expect to have water and electricity. Notes that the temperature in the region reaches 40 degrees Celsius during the day and does not drop below 28 during the night which made it necessary to use the air conditioner and more necessary possibility that you can take a bath before you leave the hotel. Special If you had in front of you a difficult day with about 500 Km to go. The makers of the hotel but had a different view. Arriving at the reception for check-out at 6:30 am (because I had no the luxury to wait until 10:00 am) and surprisingly found out later confirmed that there was only a backup generator for the reception area because the only thing that interested them was to charge their customers credit cards. When I asked if this was often their answer was YES that often happens. I think the additional comments are unnecessary. Just tell your conclusion that we left without getting breakfast and without signing any charge on my credit card, simply tell them you have the elements of my card so you can charge that how you want but I would challenge everything .... The icing on the cake was that reaching the exit gate the employee refused to let us go until I spoke with managers and repeat the above, so let us go. Later they charged the amount of 166,42 euro. What, they charged me exactly? the aircondition that do not work? the water there was not? The bathroom and the toilet could not use? breakfast is not never ate? OR, the absolute humiliation when they will not let me go; I thing, that the incident is unacceptable especially since mildly involved or booking.com and the Group Kempinski. The provided services to me, just compare with those of a camping and without provision of water and using the toilet. .

OandL-Leisure, Owner at Mokuti Etosha Lodge, responded to this review, January 15, 2013
Dear TripAdvisor Readers,

Please allow me to introduce myself as the Managing Director of O&L Leisure, the owners and operators of the Mokuti Etosha Lodge in Namibia.

Having read the report, AVOID THIS HOTEL just filed (10th January 2013). The guests stayed with us on the night of 16th December 2012 I simply must take the opportunity to correct certain points in her report and also state what actually occurred on the night in question and what our team at the Lodge did about it.

The experience our guests had at our Mokuti Lodge is indeed very unpleasant and for this we would like to sincerely apologies.

In our attempts to do so we found the information we have on the registration card seems to be either incorrect or is illegible. The only information we can read is what looks like a home or land-line telephone number. In fact we have contacted Booking.com through whom our guests made her reservation and are trying to contact her directly to apologies and take whatever steps necessary to correct matters as best possible. However, one truly needs to fully understand what really happened at the Lodge before one can simply file such a damaging report on TripAdvisor.

In summary we can confirm that at 01:30am the 3 phase power supply to our Lodge was severely compromised in as much that the supply began to fluctuate by loosing 1 of the 3 phases. This supply is provided by Nampower (Namibian Government Electricity Supply). The result of loosing 1 phase means there is an in-consistent supply to all areas resulting is lights or plugs, etc. working in some facilities and only partially in others and not at all in others.

Even this does not remain constant and power is suddenly back in an area and then gone a little later. This made it impossible for us to know how or to what extent supply to all areas was affected.

This fluctuation (surges) in power supply can also cause serious damage to many electrical appliances and equipment. The most significant result of these "surges" is that it interfered with and did not allow our installed Generator Switchgear to function with the result our Generator could not start and take over the supply of electricity to the Lodge. Had we experienced a full loss (all 3 phases) of power supply our Generator would have functioned and power to the entire Lodge would have been replaced within a few minutes.

We immediately contacted the authorities and reported the situation. They informed us that their technicians were working on the problem and all would be restored "shortly". We remained in contact with them as the power supply remained compromised.

Our incident reports indicate that the authorities were phoned every hour as from 02:00am and they even promised to dispatch a vehicle from Tsumeb (an hour away) to assist. As dawn was approaching we became increasingly frustrated and concerned at the lack of a solution.

We again contacted them(calls logged at 07:00am and 08:00am) and insisted they take some interim measures which would at least allow us to switch over to our Generator.

Eventually, at around 08:30 they co-operated and cut all phases (the 2 which were partially working) and we were immediately able to use our Generator and restore full power to the entire Lodge at 09:00am.

All equipment required including lights, plugs, phones, water pumps and geysers were then back in operation. We fully agree that the delay incurred in doing so is un-acceptable but through the night our General Manager at the Lodge tried his best to work with Nampower who were dealing with a major fault which was compromising supply to a wide spread area. The fact is that it took them from 02:00am to 08:30am to cut off the faulty supply of electricity and thus allow us to start our Generator is a matter well beyond our direct control.

This inconsistent supply is also the reason why our guests who at 06:00am found some, not all, lights and plugs working at our Reception. This supply was most definitely not supplied by our Generator which she reports is only large enough to run this one area in the Lodge. The fact remains that at 06:00am our Generator, which can supply the entire Lodge, was not working.

When our staff replied in the affirmative to her query if we experience electricity supply problems often they are correct but did not go into details as to whether this is a loss of 1 phase or a complete cut-off. The latter is what does happen often and is the reason we have a Generator large enough to run the entire Lodge. This is just one of the many challenges one faces when operating a Lodge far out in the African bush and our Generator normally switches in and our Guests hardly notice the problem at all.

The reason our guests experienced the described difficulties at our gate can be explained by the fact that the final account she refused to settle also included incidentals which had nothing to do with accommodation. The total account in the value of N$ 1,880.00 also included N$ 580.00 of both bar and restaurant items consumed the night before and without any loss of power experiences. The manner this matter was dealt with at our Reception also influenced the experiences encountered at the gate.

After the Reception staff confirmed that security at the gate could facilitate their departure without any further unpleasantness management attempted to contact our guests to try and resolve matters amicably. They in fact have been calling the landline on their registration card daily since the morning of 17th through to the 21st December. Unfortunately without success and we then attempted to contact them through Booking.com.

There was also no reason for our guests to depart without breakfast. Our breakfast service begins every day at 06:30am but we also offer all early departing guests a cold breakfast to go and this just needs to be arranged with Reception the night before and is supplied at no extra cost as all our Room Rates include breakfast. As the power was only cut off at 01:30am this cold breakfast to go would have been ready for their early 06:00am departure.

On the night in question there were 31 guests in the Lodge and none of them had a comfortable night with all services in place and working. None, one could say were happy or satisfied but we did get a lot of support from them and an over all understanding of a situation which was largely beyond our direct control. Most of them did not depart as early as our guests and we were able to interact with them constructively and take as much corrective action as possible.

In closing I would again like to apologies to our guests and if they do read this report please ask them to contact us directly so we are able to communicate and try our best to resolve matters as amicably as possible.

I can be contacted as follows:
Bruce Hutchison
bruce.hutchison@ol-leisure.com

Our GM at Mokuti as follows:
Lynton Swatton
lynton.swatton@ol-leisure.com

Finally we need to correct certain facts. The Kempinski Group no longer manage this Lodge on our behalf. We were not satisfied with matters and also found that the branding of this Lodge as a 5 Star facility was incorrect. Mokuti Etosha Lodge is a good 4-star Lodge as many other reviews confirm.

Yours sincerely,
Bruce Hutchison
