I live three blocks from "OG", as it is called by regulars, and I couldn't be happier. For just over four years now, OG has been serving up great beer, great sandwiches, and an inviting atmosphere not only to residents of Milan, but beer-lovers from all over SE Michigan. The owner/brewer, Brad Sancho, and his wonderful staff clearly love what they do and we're lucky they chose to build their business in our town.
It's a place you can come with friends or family, even small children. I recall a couple years ago visiting around Thanksgiving. Two moms were sitting at the bar with their four little kids. The moms were enjoying some beer, the kids were enjoying some Sprecher's microbrewed soda, and instead of sports on the big screen above the bar, the staff was showing Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving show for the kids. There are board games to borrow, and it's not uncommon to see a family there playing games, watching a game, or just hanging out.
Now to the beer. In four years, I haven't had any beer here I didn't like. Some styles I don't prefer no matter where I get them, but what Brad brews is always very good and true to syle. He offers some please-all basics, such as the County Street Amber, Belgian Training Wheels, and Southpaw IPA. They've also recently introduced a lager into their line-up. OG also has a creative streak and this is shown regularly in a variety of seasonal specialties and rotating taps of small batch brews. Some of my favorites are the 440 PepperSmoker, Shinebox Dunkelweizen, and the Trainjumper Black IPA. Not all are available at all times. It's fun to go and see what's brewing! Beer is reasonably priced in pints or 10 oz small sizes. They're always willing to give you a taste before committing to something "new", too! There are new small batch releases every Tuesday. You can also take home beer in a growler or reserve a mini-keg for your next party. (Plan for it to disappear quickly!)
OG also offers simple, but delicious food to complement their beer. In addition to traditional bar "nibblers" like pretzels and bar cheese, landjaeger sausage, and peanuts in the shell, there is a long list of panini sandwiches to pick from (and I hear a new chef salad is on the menu but I haven't tried it yet.) My standby favorites are the Buffalo Chicken, the Turkey w/ Bacon and Guacamole, and the Turkey Reuben. All served with a nice deli dill and kettle-cooked chips. Sandwiches with the extras average about $8.50 and, for their size, are a pretty good value.
The other great thing about OG is their commitment to the community. They regularly offer up their services to host fundraisers for local charities. They have movie nights and festivals (such as Oktoberfest) throughout the year and even have a farmer's market on their patio every Wednesday during the summer.
I've been to dozens of great brewpubs around the U.S. but I can say without feeling like a "homer" that OG is one of the best of them all! Make the trip to Milan and see for yourself. You won't regret it!
