When staying in the UP north woods, one looks forward to a great supper club at the end of a day of hiking in the Porcupine Mountains! My husband and I had driven past the Root Cellar on our way to our cottage on Lake Gogebic, about a 12-mile drive. After a full day of hiking, we headed over to the Root Cellar for dinner. After we were seated, our server took our drink order and mentioned, "you know about our two-for-one prime rib, right?" I told her, no, we had never been to the Root Cellar before, and thanked her for telling us. I ordered the walleye dinner, which our server said was the best there is. My husband ordered the black and blue burger. The cream of potato soup was delicious. With the soup, our server also brought a basket with one roll, two sets of silverware, and a plate with a salad bowl on it. After finishing the soup, I told my husband, "there must be a salad bar in this place..." since the empty salad bowl was somewhat of a tip off. Since our server never returned, I went back to the entrance and asked the hostess if there was a salad bar, and she giggled and told me its location. The salad bar was fresh, and I brought back a small serving. Our server returned about 15 minutes later (my husband had now almost finished his diet Coke) with our meals. My walleye WAS excellent. My baked potato, however, while almost thoroughly baked, contained one of those big knots that turns grey-black when you cook it. It comprised about a fifth of my potato. My husband's black and blue burger was small and dry -- not so good after anticipating a nice, big, juicy burger. Our server never returned to check on us. My husband's diet Coke was gone, and I felt so badly that I kept offering him some of my iced tea to go with that dry burger. When she brought the check, our server just put it on the table without a word as to whether we paid her or at the bar. Long story short -- great walleye, dry burger, poor service. When we told our server we'd never been there before, she should have told us there was a salad bar (especially since the description for my walleye meal said "salad," not salad bar). Also, a hint on where to pay the bill and a check-in to see if all was well with the meal is kind of ...expected. Oh, the hummingbird? There was a hummingbird feeder hanging outside our window. With the almost 20-minute wait between when we placed our order and received it, the little hummingbird provided good entertainment.
