“Average hotel in Mackinaw City”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2007

The Holiday Inn Express in Mackinaw City is a decent hotel for a family.
We had a room with two queen beds. It was clean and ready for us when we
arrived at 3pm. The location is a slightly longer walk to the shops than
the other hotels along the strip. However, it is right next to the Fort.
The breakfast is good value for a family. It is a continental breakfast
plus cheese omelet and biscuits with sausage gravy. Breakfast ends at
9:30am and when we went, it was quiet a crowd so don't expect to sleep in
and still have breakfast be available.

We were extremely disappointed in this hotel. Hallways very narrow, rooms cramped and not very clean. Lobby is way too small, a mess of kitschy junk, dusty fake plants and the breakfast area had too few tables for the hoards of people and kids. Sauna at the pool did not work and the price was very high compared to other hotels on our trip. Windows were filthy, curtains sagged and bed was very uncomfortable.

We stayed at another Holiday Inn Express in Ludington that was almost as bad.

We will never use this chain again.

Ouch! My back still hurts. The beds in this hotel were hard as rocks. The best thing about this hotel was the shower. It had a great showerhead that felt like a massage and the shower curtain rod was curved, so the shower actually felt very roomy. The rooms were not as clean as I'd like to see--my son was wearing white socks, and the bottoms of them were black just from walking on the hotel room carpet,. The location was convenient to the Mackinac Bridge and the downtown Mackinaw City area. The staff was friendly, but the front desk staff members were slow and took care of phone calls while keeping guests waiting in front of them.

The breakfast was not great. If you don't mind the same thing day after day, you might not mind, but the only hot food they had were small omelets with cheese in them and no other ingredients available, and sausage gravy and bisquits. They also had cinnamon rolls, bagels, and other sweet pastry items, as well as cold cereal with milk. The buffet area was very small and crowded. Watch out for people who aren't looking where they are going! A woman backed into me as I walked behind the buffet table, spilling hot coffee on my hand. If you have small children, have them wait at the table and just have adults go to the buffet. The tables fill up fast, so get there early. The staff members do watch for things to run out and they quickly refill them.

The parking lot area was convenient and well lit at night. The lobby is nice, with chairs by a big window if you need to wait for a ride or just want to relax.

We recently stayed 2 nights at the holiday inn express May 2007. Have stayed here previously. The bedding appears new - we like the sheets encasing a comforter it's cleaner and the pillows were great. Room was clean with refrigerator. Warm cookies were available for guests in the evening. Good coffee and breakfast in the morning. We were on the 2nd floor facing North - did not hear any road noises or hallway noises after 11pm. The hotel appears strictly managed, secure and monitored in the evening. I find the location great for walking it's an easy walk to the park and into town. Surrounded by a couple of good restaurants. I will stay there again when passing through in Sept.

The beds in our rooms were very uncomfortable and made our backs hurt and we could not get any sleep at all. They really need to get new mattresses since they slop down in the middle of the bed. The room did not get cleaned at all during our stay. We had to call the front desk several times to get towels both mornings so we could take showers. The management would never return our calls and was never in all weekend.

Awesome place! This Holiday Inn Express is one of the nicest hotels that I have stayed at. The people working there definitely know their stuff! The view from my room was outstanding! It was a refreshing to look out my window and see the Mackinaw Bridge in all of it's glory. I definitely recommend this place to any traveler.
