Booking it: We booked through Choice Hotels back in February for a rate of $78/night for a 2 double bed lake view room, non-smoking. At the last minute we decided to arrive a day early and the rate for Saturday was still $78. We were surprised because last year at this time it would have been $120 or so.
Why it's a great deal: Our room #425, ask for it! Had a vaulted ceiling so it felt spacious. A small fridge and microwave are included. Perfect for making lunch in the room! Breakfast is complimentary. It includes: eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit salad (from a can, not fresh) dry cereals, hot cereals, bagels, toast, donuts, make-it-yourself waffles, a variety of juices, coffee and tea, milk. Breakfast is available from 7:00-10:00am in the breakfast room on the second level. An elevator runs from the first to the third floors, so our room on the fourth floor would not be good for a disabled person since there are about 16 stairs to climb.
Also included in the room rate is a complimentary pass to a nearby hotels indoor waterpark. It is not large, but was fun for a cold and rainy afternoon. We spent another warm afternoon on the beach. We were the only ones out there, yet the beach was raked daily. There are 28 beach chairs and 6 tables. In a seperate building in the middle of the parking lot you will find a fitness center, laundry/vending machine area, pool and jacuzzi with plenty of pool towels. The pool looked clean and we enjoyed our swim. Next we headed over to the jacuzzi and noticed a small mouse had drowned! We immediately notified the staff, who ran over to fish out the mouse, quickly emptied the pool, disinfected everything and refilled it within 40 minutes. The new water was sparkling clean. We were thanked for reporting it. We realize problems creep up on any hotel, the important thing is how they handle it and this hotel did an ideal job. The property itself is well-maintained. During our stay new pillows and comforters arrived. We saw nothing wrong with the other ones, yet were happy to have the new ones. The white comforters make it easy to spot dirt so I like them a lot! Last summer during our stay the carpets were replaced. We observed this year that more flowers were being added and the staff were all friendly and quick to assist us with our questions.
The room itself had two double beds, a sofa that converts to a bed to sleep two more, an armoire with the tv, 2 small drawers and 2 large drawers, a bench-like chest with additional storage and a table with two chairs. On the balcany are two more chairs and a small table. One negative: wifi is advertised but the signal simply does not reach the back of the hotel. We needed to go to the lobby to get a signal. Not a big deal for us, but may be for a business traveler.
In the past we stayed in the court-side room for $58. This is a good choice for someone not looking to spend much time in the room. The window faces the parking lot so for privacy the curtains must stay closed. The room is very small so adding the darkness makes it feel clausterphobic. For a family stay we highly recommend the larger lake view room.
We think the staff is nicer at the Clarion than at the Hamilton. We compared rates with Northpointe Inn (They are $20/night higher than Clarion for the same perks, really) Clarion offers the waterpark pass and Baymont Inn does not, so clearly the Clarion is the winner in our book. We give the lake view rooms a 3-star rating. There is not a spa, restaurant on-site, or fuzzy robes in the closet, but it is a great budget-friendly, family vacation hotel! We loved falling asleep to the sound of waves and hope you will, too!
