“Love this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

Anytime I am withing 50-60 miles of Darrow's, I make sure I stop there for a meal. My friends rave about the whitefish (I'm not a fish eater) and whatever I pick has been top notch. And if you like desserts - a huge variety and have yet to find one I didn't want more of. Best time to go - a little off-hours so you don't have a long wait.

“Always Eat Here When in Mackinaw City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

Darrow's has been a tradition for our family for thirty years. We used to eat there when camping or traveling with our kids and now we go there whenever we pass through town. Family atmosphere with very good to great food, depending on what you order. Old-fashioned American-style meals with homemade pies. The whitefish is excellent.

“great restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

Our hotel recommended this restaurant. It is very reasonable with great homemade cooking. Real mashed potatoes. Fantastic and huge portions. You can order half portions.which I did and it was still plenty. when you enter , there is a huge selection of desserts. It is very popular and always a wait according the locals waiting in line.

“This is where the local's eat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Wonderful home cooked food and great deserts. Sit back and listen to the conversations. You will really learn about the area. They always have specials and I gravitate to either White Fish or Meat Loaf. The walls are filled with photographs of the past. 'What's Happening' is just a booth or waitress away. Fudge is not the maqin menu item.

“Popular Family Restaurant in Mackinaw”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

We were at the Mission Point Lighthouse near Traverse City, when several people in the gift shop urged us to eat at Darrow's when we were in Mackinaw City. Glad we took their advice one Friday night in September!
Darrow's got its start as a diner, but it has evolved into a popular family restaurant serving American fare. The wood-paneled walls evoke a north woods ski lodge.
This restaurant is known for Lake Michigan whitefish. Our baked parmesan encrusted whitefish did not disappoint. It was accompanied by garden salad and green beans.
Our server stated that,"roast beef" is another popular dish. I expected prime rib, but "roast beef" here is what I would call pot roast. The dish needed a little more flavor (ketchup was handy), and it came with buttered mashed potatoes and homemade stuffing. Darrow's bakes fresh pies in-house, and we sampled two varieties: 4-berry and Dutch Cherry. Great choices!
Darrow's is located near Colonial Michilimackinac, the restored 18th century fort (see my comments). Like the fort, it is open only during the May-October "season."
We asked our friendly server how the staff copes when the restaurant is closed. She said parts of Northern Michigan have not fully recovered from the "Great Recession." She added that the restaurant management allows staff to order food at cost, and that she cans and freezes and looks forward to next year's season.
