They don't leave you asking for more when you visit Fort Michilimackinac! Your tour starts with a 13 minute video of the history of the fort--all with costumed re-enactments. Your walk to the pallisades of the fort take you right along the shore of Lake Michigan right next to the Mackinac Bridge (the entrance to the fort and the gift shop is UNDER the bridge!) Those views alone are breath-taking! There are many buildings within the fort that have been faithfully reconstructed, and many costumed interpreters are about "living life" as they would in the late 1700's. We visit yearly, and have never heard or saw the same story twice from these wonderful historians. Redcoat soldiers fire cannons and shoot salutes with black-powder guns, plus music is a lively addition. There is an underground archaelogical museum which gives you the thorough history of the fort's excavation process with artifacts, and another underground "firearms of the frontier" display. The "Kid's Quarters" is a fantastic display geared towards children, and includes hands-on activites for them (my children like to lock their dad in the "Black Hole.") The thing that I appreciate is that despite visiting every year for five years, we enjoy it each time!
