“Best value on Mackinac Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2010

We stayed two nights at the Main Street Inn & Suites on a trip through Michigan and Wisconsin in September. This is a terrific place to stay, and a great value. The rooms are very nice, well appointed and very quiet. It is almost directly across the street from the ferry dock, and especially convenient if taking the Shepler's ferry. The hotel bellman can pick up your luggage at the dock, and deliver it to your room without a problem. The hotel is also across the street from a bicycle rental shop, and a bike trip around the island is a "must-do" regardless of your age. We had two meals at nearby Seabiscuit's Restaurant, and enjoyed both.
If you are thinking of staying at the Grand Hotel but are put off at the high cost for what you get, consider doing as we did. Stay at the Main Street Inn, and have the buffet lunch at the Grand Hotel. It was worth the cost to enjoy that unique experience, along with a tour of the hotel. But we found that there is much more to Mackinac Island than the Grand Hotel. So the buffet lunch satisfied that "need" and we were able to spend the money saved on other enjoyable things the island had to offer.

The Main Street Inn and Suites was beautifully appointed and elegant. Room was extremely comfortable. The sitting/game room was a plus. The location was perfect--across the street from Shepler's Ferry and in the heart of all the shops and restaurants. We look forward to staying there again.

Stayed mid-week one night in Oct. with 5 family members ages 50-60. Staff was professional, courteous and attentive, from desk to room attendants. Stayed in 2nd floor, 1-BR jacuzzi suite (never used jacuzzi - paid extra for that room because it was the only room still available to accommodate us all in one room at the time we booked). I was really intent on getting the 3rd floor suite because I doubted that on the second floor we would have a view of Main Street and the Bay. I was wrong. This may be the only inn that looks out on Main Street and also has a view of the bay beyond the buildings across the street (most others have tall building across the street that would obscure the view of the water). One room suite was huge -- plenty big for the five of us. Bedroom had two queen beds where we put the 4 women; the lone man with us got the rollaway in the living room. Living room was huge with small balcony and large bay window, sofa, two chairs, coffee table, fridge, sink, coffee maker, large TV, small breakfast table w/two chairs, and plenty of extra floor space for luggage and belongings).
Hotel was impeccably clean and seemed new. We have stayed on the island before and some of the Inns with period decor seem like the wallpaper was original (Chippewa accoss the street is an example of rooms that wallpaper, carpets, decor, etc. seem tired). Main Street Inn and Suites seems like it is competley brand new. Just beautiful, clean, and fresh.
Beds very comfortable.
Staff could not have been nicer. Room attendant even gave us 3 extra robes upon request and apologized several times that they were not as nice as the original 2 robes in the room. Little box of fudge at turndown was nice touch.
Location was perfect. Looked out onto Main Street, so we could look out all times of day and night and see the comings and goings of the ferries, horses, tours, etc. And nice view of water beyond the buildings across the street. Excellent sunrise over the bay. Central location is perfect for window shopping, dining, renting bikes, horses, walking, running, bar-hopping. Hotel is directly across from Sheppler's ferry so we were able to haul our own luggage with no problem...just collect it right at Main Street where it is placed by Sheppler deck hands and take it directly across the street. All three ferry lines cost the same (make sure you get the small discount coupon offered for staying on the island $3.00 discount per adult).
Icing on the cake was when we checked out we were given a coupon for a free slab of fudge at Joannes-- the fudge shop on first floor of hotel. Their fudge is excellent! Eat it same day or next though, as all fudge is best when fresh.
There is no pool at this inn, so that might be a deterrent for some families. There is a pool table in a roomy lounge on second floor. Personally, we found the lack of pool to be an advantage because we were travelling without children and the hotel was not swarming with kids running around. It was very quiet. We were told it was sold out the night we were there and we rarely saw or heard another guest. Elevator is small but it was always available and quick. For a sold-out hotel this was extremely quiet.
Cost was reasonable. Staying on the island is never cheap. However, some hotels/inns are simply outrageous in price. We benefitted from off season pricing, and felt the prices at Main Street Inn & Suites were fair, in comparison to some of the other nicer places on the island.
I did lots of research prior to this trip. One, because I personally am fussy about where I stay. Two, because I was hosting my family who had never been to the island before and may never have the opportunity to return. So I wanted it to be uber special and memorable for all. Main Street Inn & Suites did not disappoint. My family felt pampered, spoiled, and treated. They fell in love with the island because of this Inn. I feel I made the best selection possible and when I return, this will always be my #1 choice.
A couple of random notes about visiting the island. Oct. was much quieter than in summer. We were just two weeks away from the island practically closing for the winter. As a result, stores and restaurants tended to close early, some were closed for the season already. However, getting around was more enjoyable than in high season. We usually go to the island in July or Aug. and it is very crowded and touristy feeling. Just teaming with families and small kids. Oct. is more enjoyable in my opinion. This is not a "beach" island, as there is very little in the way of sandy beach, if any. In summer heat, downtown smells of horse urine. I had warned my family about this and we were pleasantly surprised that in Oct., because there are fewer horses and the temp. is cooler, the smell of pee is almost non existent. In either case, the island is kept impecabbly clean -- streets are hosed every night. Lastly, 24 hours is ample time to experience Mackinac Island. Dining options are so-so. Shopping is mostly souvenir shops. Nightlife is small-town. We arrived on a 12:30 pm boat, and left on a noon boat the next day and felt like we had ample time to chill, experience the island, get in every store and have more than enough local food/fudge. We rented bikes the first day, went bar hopping at night, strolled Main Street and beyond several times. One of us even ran the 8 mile perimeter of the island the second morning there. All within a relaxed pace 24 hours. This was a trip none of us will forget. Thank you Mackinaw Inn and Suites for making our trip so special!

We stayed at the main street inn and suites on the island as part of our tour of the lakes area, and so far it is by far the best of the hotels we have had the pleasure to stay in on the trip, and one of the best boutique style hotels we have ever stayed in.

Everything from the arrangements for delivery of the bags from the dock, checkin, room quality etc etc were top notch. I asked for more tea and coffee and it was bought promptly, when the beds were turned down a nice little box of fudge was left. At checkout we were given a further voucher for more free fudge, forget the diet!

All of the above would be good at any hotel, but we only paid $90 a night which was an absolute bargain for this level of hotel and service.

We would definitely stay here again.

Main Street Inn and Suites was awesome. We stayed here during our destination wedding on Mackinac and we couldn't have picked a better place. The staff was so friendly and helpful, especially since we had a room changes from the standard room to the honeymoon suite. They helped move all our things for us. I even called ahead to alert them when we were coming in on the ferry that we would have a lot of things due to the wedding and they were very accomadating. None of our things were lost. The hotel was also very clean. The only suggestions we have are to update the televisions, but that's just our preference of having an lcd tv. The only other thing is water pressure in the showers weren't that great, but I think every hotel has that issue. We would definitely stay at the hotel again and would recommend it to our friends and family. Even though it was on Main Street, noise was never an issue. It was great!
