“Not the hotel for an anniversary trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

My biggest gripe? The swimming pool is literally in the middle of the hotel, not enclosed, where there are stunning acoustics to hear screaming kids. Until 9:30 at night. And at 9 in the morning. Or whenever their parents let them go swimming. All the hotel rooms on all four floors circle the area around and above the pool and hottub area. Which is ok, if you have kids with you. But if you are on a romantic trip with your spouse, this is a serious bummer. It was a good thing we don't go to bed early either, since the pool is open until 10 pm. Besides that, the service was really helpful. However, the room was a little small and needed some updated carpet and wallpaper nad fixtures. It was fine for one night.

I just returned from a long weekend on the island and I used this site to check reviews and found some negative ones. Needless to say, I didn't have my hopes up and with this being a festival weekend I thought it might be a nightmare. But the opposite was found. We were met a the ferry and our luggage was taken right over to our room. Staff at the desk were friendly and helpful. We stayed in room 205 which the hotel, by their own words, was a "smaller economic" room. Was it? Yes and yes. But additionally, it was in a word, spectacular!! Who cares if it's small? It served a purpose of sleeping, showering and holding my stuff. Very comfortable beds. Spotless room. Is it dated as one person complained? It is. But So Is Everything On The Island! It is the point after all. We were next to the balcony which was great. Sitting on the front porch having cocktails and meeting new people was a lot of fun. The only one negative was the bartender at their restaurant was a jerk, but he could've been having a bad day. My sister had the same experience. I would come here again and if I do, I'm requesting 205!

Room Tip: Simple. Just call them and book! We got a great rate and they could answer all the question you have...

We stayed here for our first night on Mackinac Island. Byron was a very nice gentleman who brought our luggage from the ferry to our room and then to the Grand Hotel the next day. The rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful and the room was quite comfortable. The only negative I would say is that the swimming pool is located in an atrium and the rooms encircle that atrium allowing for loud noise coming from the pool area to be heard while in your room. There is a quiet time from 10 pm to 7 am and after 10 pm, the noise seemed to lessen.

We've been coming to Mackinac Island since 1981 when we honeymooned at the Grand Hotel and have missed only one year. We come back every Memorial weekend and stay on the Island, at first we stayed every five years at the Grand but with having two boys staying there wasn't much fun when they had to dress in a suit and tie every day after five o'clock and had the longer walk into town to go look through the island shops, so we decided it would be more fun to stay in town on the Island and the Lake View Hotel was the best choice because of its location to the ferry docks....right across the street and its location to the shops so that as the boys got older we could let them go out on their own and didn't have to worry about a long walk to town.......we've stayed here 16 out of the last 17 years so we know some of the staff pretty well and love the bell captain Byron as he's watched our boys from kids to young men now.......the pool and hot tub get a lot of use from the family and now that our older son is married he and our daughter in law also come up so now we use 2 rooms.......everybody enjoys the breakfast....love the optional omlets you can purchase........the restaurant has great food and drink selection ........pizza's great too........we always get a room on the 4th floor one of the turret rooms and can really take in the sights from there watching people in town or ferry's coming and going.......best part is viewing freighters going by........just a wonderful place for anyone to stay here....they have a ramp on the side to get strollers or wheel chairs in ......the porch is a nice place to sit in one of the rockers and just relax.......we're already planning next years stay..........

When we visited the island for the first time in June our big decision was whether or not to stay at the iconic Grand Hotel. After reading multiple reviews we decided on the Lake View and were generally pleased with our choice.
The Lake View is conveniently located near the Shepler's ferry and your luggage is taken to and from the hotel for you. It is located right along the many shops on the main street. This could be considered a convenient location but it can be congested and even a little noisy in the late evening.
The room we had was nicely decorated. The bathroom was a little on the small side. The property has an indoor pool which was the big draw for us since we had 2 school age kids with us. The pool was moderate to cool temperature but good size and nice surrounding area( it essentially sits in the middle of the hotel with rooms rising up on all 4 sides. The "free breakfast" consists of one of those pseudo waffles you put in a toaster and should be eliminated or upgraded as it is really an embarrassing offering. Overall this hotel is a nice choice and competitive with other properties we saw.
We did visit The Grand Hotel and paid the $10 fee to set foot on the property. When I checked prices we could have stayed in a small room at this hotel for just about the same as what it cost for a bigger turret room at the Lake View. The hotel's main advantage as I saw it is that it is set off far away from the crowded streets packed with tourists. You have a pretty view of the water and gardens and just a much more country feel. The snooty factor is quite high and based on other high end properties where I have stayed it looked like it would be in the middle of the pack in terms of decorating, views, etc. having to dress up each night for dinner would not be appealing to me. This place seems most suited to honeymooners who might want the chance to dance and wear their best finery. The one outstanding feature was the pool which is huge, famous and beautiful. I had called about the pool temp and decided not to risk it being warm enough to go in this outdoor pool. However, when we visited the property it felt perfectly warm. You can, for a fee, use the pool with a day pass even if you are notnstaying atbthe hotel. Keep in mind that The Grand is a bit of a hike down to the shops although I think the hotel may provide horse drawn carriage transportation.
We ate lunch at The Iroquois and it looked very nice and had the advantage of being right on the water with a lovely view while still being very close to the shops.
In terms of time on the island we thought 2 nights was just right. The shops
S take no more than a day. The bike ride around the island takes a couple hours. It is very nice but if you bike anywhere but the perimeter of the island you either hit heavy bike traffic or get into some seriously steep hills. The fort was very well done and we enjoyed several hours there. A horse drawn carriage ride to tour the island is also a nice way to pass an hour or so.
One final note...we had considered taking our elderly parents with us but were concerned about the handicap accessibility of the island. Our parents can walk moderate distances but have trouble with steps and the like. I do not think this island is well suited to those with limitations, especially if traveling without help. When you return to Mackinac City you have to tote your luggage to your car which can be a distance. Much of the inner island has very steep hills. The fort has a lot of steps. There was a handicap accessible carriage but it still looked to me like it would be hard to step into. Since we did not actually travel with our parents I cannot say for sure but I would be leery about this destination.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the turret roo which has a small sitting area

This is very good hotel.
The room was always clean and the staff was wonderful.
The hotel had a pool and a hot tub.
Also the hotel is in the heart of downtown Mackinac Island and a
stone's throw away from the water.
If we were to come back we would stay here again.

This Hotel is perfectly located on Main Street, near the Sheplers Ferry Dock and has a long porch with rocking chairs to watch the activity of the town, horses with carriages, Drays, and people walking and bicycles. Our room #203 was spotless. King with window on Main St. It is great to awaken to the sound of horses hooves in the morning. Next to us was a porch to sit to watch things happening and a right hand view of the lake. The Breakfast was great everything to be desired to start your day, staffed with helpful attendants. The pool in the center of the building which we did not take looks inviting and clean and inviting. All of the staff from the front desk to the porters to help with luggage were friendly and courteous. The "Goodfellows" Restaurant was friendly too, and the food was excellent and priced fine for us, we had supper there both days while we were there. We are from New Hampshire, and hope to get back for a longer visit to Mackinac Island again and The Lakeview will be our choice, hopefully room #203.
