“Romantic Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2006

We just returned from a three night stay at the Harbour View Inn on Mackinac Island for our first wedding anniversary. We weren't sure what to expect as numerous friends had said that the accomodations on the island were outdated and wouldn't compare to our honeymoon suite in Hawaii, but we were very pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The inn was maybe a quarter mile from the ferry docks and upon checking in we were told that our luggage had beat us to our room and we had walked straight to the inn from the boat! (The same held true with checkout, we checked out twenty minutes before the ferry was to leave and the porter got our luggage to the dock with time to spare.) The inital view from the road was absolutely breathtaking and the staff could not be more welcoming. The location was fabulous as well -- close enough to downtown to get around without hiring a taxi, yet far enough not to be bothered by the noise of the city. We asked for an upgrade to an air conditioned room but were denied as all rooms were reserved during our stay. Honestly though, with the ceiling fan on and the door open to the balcony, the breeze was plenty enough to keep us cool. Breakfast was like the other review stated, no protein, but we found the pubs downtown to be reasonably priced and we never went hungry.

The staff as I said before were phenominal, we inquired about a nice restaurant for our anniversary dinner and they graciously obtained reservations and taxi service for a meal we won't soon forget at Woods. It was reasonably priced for the quality at $20 - $30 a meal, with a courteous and attentive staff, and a "no tipping" policy that couldn't be beat! We also learned from another passenger on our taxi (they weren't private as we also did not know) that if dressed appropriately people not staying at the Grand Hotel can take advantage of their evening activities without paying the $12 fee for stepping foot on the grounds; it started at 8 o'clock with demi tasse and a harpist, and at 9 the harpist stopped and a big band roared for drinks and dancing in the ballroom. It is definitely worth looking into for a special night out!

But back to Harbour View... Our room was cleaned daily, the housekeeping staff that we passed in the halls always carried a smile, and our bathroom looked freshly renovated. My only negative comments would be that the king size bed was quite hard with only two pillows and the wallpaper (we stayed in 2204) was a bit wild and not recommended for the chlostrophobic. If we ever return to Mackinac Island we will definitely stay here again!

  • Liked — the atmosphere was very relaxing
  • Disliked — the bed was too hard and lacked pillows
  • Tips/Secrets — inquire into ammenities when reserving, upgrades may be hard later!

Harbor View is a very nice inn on Mackinac Island. I stayed in one of their less expensive (on an upper floor, no balcony, etc). Room was clean but lacked the ambiance of one of their higher-priced rooms.

Here is the scoop on the Harbor View. Rooms big, clean, and quiet. The staff extreemly friendly. The location is close to town. The prices are very competive compared to other hotels. It was a delight to bring my family there. Here a just a couple things to know. Thye continential breakfast is just how it sounds no protien, All breads, and some fruites. Also the hot tub can't be set below 104. I hope this helps you with your decession.

Our favorite place to stay on Mackinac Island! We have toured most lodging facilities on the island and find this to be the nicest, with great value. A short walk or bicycle ride to the downtown area provides convenience without the crowds of the main street hotels.
The gardens and large gazebo are very enjoyable. Afternoon weddings are frequently performed there and are fun to watch. Rooms in the 2 back buildings are air conditioned and are spacious. Air conditioning and TVs are not found in all hotels on the island.
Breakfast is included in the dining room, though frequently guests will enjoy coffee on the large front porch overlooking the street, the bay, and the horse-drawn carriages.
Facilities are spotless. Staff is friendly and helpful. We, like many guests, are repeat customers who return each year.

We stayed at the Harbor View on June 30th, 2003. It is our 2nd time staying at the Harbor View. We called the day of arrival to see if they had any availability and they did. We checked in about 2 hours later.
Very courtious and pleasant staff, got our bags from the dock to our room in a very timely fashion. Our room was a VERY nice room(2 queen beds and pull-out sofa. Had air conditioning and ceiling fans. Nice continental breakfast also. Porter got our bags to dock at time promised upon checking out. Overall excellant experience. In any future visits to the Island, we plan to stay at the Harbor View. It is well worth the walk from the docks. Nice view and away from the hustle-bustle of downtown!!!

We traveled to Mackinac Island for our honeymoon Labor Day week. We stayed at the Harbor View and had a wonderful experience. The hotel was reasonably priced (booked on-line for $135 per night). We were greeted at the dock and our luggage was taken to the hotel by bicycle. It was a short walk for us to the hotel. The hotel staff were very courteous and helpful to us, the hotel was clean and well maintained. Our room was quite large with a 19 in. TV., and a ceiling fan. The room was quite warm during the day, due to the warm weather, and we wish there would have been air conditioning or a window fan. Overall, we enjoyed our stay there and would consider the Harbor View again. Plus, the view from the porch is FANTASTIC!
