“A grand time at the Grand Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

My husband and I travel from CA to stay at the Grand Hotel for the Somewhere in Time weekend. We have done so for the last 7 years. We usually stay several days before and several days after the event. It is a trip we look forward to every year. The hotel is gorgeous and packed with history. The grounds are exquisite. Take advantage of any tours or lectures being offered. The cost of the weekend is not cheap but if you add on the extra days (at a lower rate) it is well worth it. Remember the room comes with breakfast and dinner. The food is excellent with a full American breakfast and a five course dinner. Those two meals plus a snack during the day is all you need. Maybe you can add some fudge that you pick up downtown. For the Somewhere in Time weekend a Saturday buffet lunch is included which is phenomenal. The employees were polite, courteous and professional. Any requests we have made have been done so in a timely manner. The owner Dan Musser is a wonderful man and very warm, accommodating and concerned about all of his guests. We look forward to seeing and talking to him every year. The hotel is an easy walk from the ferry and they take care of your luggage from the time you step onto the ferry to travel to Mackinac Island. We were fortunate to get a lakeside room our first year and we request a lakeside every year since. Yes, it is more money but the view you have from the moment you get up in the morning is breathtaking. We love staying at the Grand Hotel and highly recommend it.

Lovely despite cold weather during Lilac Fest, 1st week of June, wearing winter coats to ferry over and withstand island temps, rain. Loved every hotel nook and cranny on our 3-day special at hotel. Almost missed one night (did miss dinner) due to reduced ferry crossings...wise to inquire. All other info was profuse and as wonderful as reviewed by others, tho the meal schedule gives one a feeling of hurry up and wait at massively attended meals. Otherwise charming. Now view it from lakeside home!

Room Tip: Extreme savings when you take advantage of specials. Regular rates high, very touristy on island as...

Once again my wife an I had a wonderful time participating in the Murder Mystery Weekend. The entertainment by the cast was beyond compare and the participants put on a very good show also. Reuniting with other guests from years past is always interesting, too. The Grand itself was up to it normal high standards. Everything was excellent including the weather.

Room Tip: Lake views are the best but with the giant front porch you really don't need one.

This was our 1st time staying at the Grand Hotel. The hotel amenities are great, there is a lot of history and grandeur on the property. It is family owned and is a historic hotel, it opened in 1887. The rooms are large, comfortable and well appointed. The lake view rooms have an excellent view of the lake, bridge and mainland. The hotel has bicycles for the guests to rent and are less expensive than the ones offered in town. The meals are fantastic and presentations are great. They have four different dinner menus and all have a good selection. The dinner has a formal dress code and all guests are requested to be in formal attire after 6 pm. Most of the servers were very professional and attentive to their tables, a few seemed to be preoccupied with avoiding tending to requests. Maybe it was because they were close to the end of the season. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they have a daily activity sheet and news letter delivered to your room each day. In the evening they have live entertainment and dancing. It was a great experience but not one I would make annual plans to attend.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms on the 2nd floor or above.

The most exquisite experience of my life was spending one night at the Grand Hotel. It was on my bucket list for a very long time - since I saw "Somewhere in Time". I read the book Bid Time Return which was the basis for the movie. In it, the year Richard tried to find Elise was 1896, the same year my beloved grandmother was born. Fascination kicked in and I needed to go there. I finally went in 1995, but just for the day. Then I felt the compulsion to stay overnight. It was a glorious day and an unbelieveable experience. The history was just as exciting as my stay. Making it my goal to return is so compelling ... I vow to return and stay for several days. If you ever want to go back in time, go there. You'll love it.

Room Tip: They are all one of a kind and all beautiful.

We are a couple in our late 40's and although most of the clients were a bit older than us, we had a fabulous time. I must say that my husband was a bit thrown by the proper attire after 6pm rule, but it was very nice. Live music every night at multiple locations throughout the hotel was my favorite part, especially in the Terrace Room with dancing! Fabulous food, excellent location. Nothing negative to say!!

Room Tip: Make sure you request type of bed eg: kingsize as opposed to 2 full size! Luckily, they changed our...

This was my second trip to the Grand Hotel. The hotel is so beautiful and the service is excellent. Everyone makes you feel special. The rooms are gorgeous. There's nothing like sitting on that porch in a rocking chair and looking out at the Mackinac Bridge. It's truly a "once in a lifetime" experience, but I keep going back for more. I will definitely go back, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
