“A beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

Had a great time at the Grand Hotel, the island is so pretty with the changing colors. The parlor has such personality and the staff is very friendly. Every meal is spectacular and gourmet. Highly recommend the Grand Hotel!

The hotel is very large. It is clean. I gave it a 4 because the desk clerk was not honest with me. We stayed during the closing of the hotel for the season. I asked for a room with a view of the water. The desk clerk said that there were none available. However, when we stepped off the elevator, there was a beautiful room open for public viewing that he could have given to us. Instead he gave us a room at the far end of the hotel overlooking a decaying old roof. His lie ruined my whole stay.

I have stayed numerous times at the Grand..romantic get aways with hubby, girlfriend time outs, conferences, jazz festivals and golf outings and have never been disappointed. Each room is uniquely decorated, service excellent and always a memorable time! From rocking on the longest summer hotel front porch, golfing the Jewel and Woods, devouring a Grand pecan ball, viewing the Mackinac bridge from the cuppolo bar to falling asleep with the clip clop of horses..what not to love? It is an experience..close your eyes and imagine Esther Williams swimming in the pool, Christopher Reeves filming "Somewhere in Time", presidents and governors enjoying the island's uniqueness. Each stay at The Grand Hotel is a treasured memory. It is a one of a kind hotel..really incomparable. Like a fine wine..just enjoy.

Room Tip: Each room is unique and priced accordingly. Room price includes meals.be sure to tour hotel lobby,gr...

This is a great place for the historical value. The room this time was quite large however, there was no view. Housekeeping knocked and entered at 7am! Ridiculous! Food was average.

Room Tip: Request balcony room however you don't always get what you request.

The Grand looks so beautiful and stately sitting high atop the hill. My husband and I took a walk there and were rudely stopped by a hotel employee. They told us we were not permitted past that location if we weren't guests. Fine, we left promptly. Her rude attitude and condescending attitude were very unappealing to us. The next day we decided we'd pay the $10 per person fee so we'd be permitted to explore the hotel and grounds. Once inside we were so incredibly disappointed. The decor was gaudy and very poorly decorated. I expected the decor to meet or beat the Hotel Hershey or other Premiere hotels. It was nothing at all like we expected. Horrible color choices, mismatched furniture, color and style. Whoever decorated that beautiful old hotel sure did it a disservice. It has such potential, but was totally destroyed by someone's "non-vision". It should be decorated in period style with classy pieces! The grounds closest to the hotel are maintained....but walking further on the property, very little is taken care of. The gardens are unmaintained, the banks unmanicured. So sad to see, with so much potential with the location and property. After our tour, my husband and I were both so happy that the Grand was booked for the dates of our vacation. We would have been so upset if we paid a good price for a room there, and finding out the inside certainly does NOT match the outside. They try to portray the hotel as a very high class location. The staff was rude and unhelpful and the decor very disappointing. We stayed at the Hotel Iroquois. It was much simpler, GREAT location and the room was nicely adorned. At least we know for our next trip to Mackinac that the Grand will NOT even be a consideration.

I am surprised by the negative reviews of the Grand Hotel. Please take time to read the history of the hotel and the explanation of the decor. "The decorator wants each room to be a package. If given two packages, one in a brown bag with a yarn tie, and the other pink and white striped with a red bow and flowers, which present would you choose? "This is the decorator's analogy. He also wanted all of the summer colors inside the hotel. It is a historic hotel, 1 of 12 wooden hotels left in the US and one of those is not longer in operation.
I just returned from my first visit and was extremely pleased with every aspect. I felt pampered and thankful to have had the experience.
