“Haan's 1830 Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011 via mobile

We made a trip to Mackinac Island during the annual lilac festival, on rather short notice. I had never been to Mackinac before so I was relying on reviews of hotels and B&Bs. The first few places I called were booked, and when I asked those proprietors for recommendations for other lodging, each of them mentioned Haan's. I'm grateful they did, we enjoyed it thoroughly. Nice staff, nice building and rooms, nice porch for people watching, and close enough to downtown. We liked the walk, it helped us burn off some calories, and it kept the noise down. Because it is 10 minutes from the dock, it feels more like a neighborhood. We would definitely stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, and nicely decorated. It was quiet at night and the location was close, but not too close, to the center of town.

Pros:

- friendly owners
- great location
- nice rooms

Cons:

- our bed definitely needed a new mattress
- breakfast was pretty minimal: bagels, juice,
cereal in small boxes, muffins/bread. No
hot items.
- breakfast ran from 8:30 to 9:30 only, and
breakfast area was a bit cramped
- management could be tighter: there were
three of us but both days we were supplied
with only 2 bath towels. Also, room didn't
contain WiFi password.

I would have no problem staying here again but would probably look around.

we have been to Mackinac Island several times now and stayed at different places However this trip was one of the best times we have had on the island. the Haan's were very frendly & the morning breakfast was a delight as we listened to the stories and met other families. we received a lot of great advise from the Inn Keeper on what to do & where to go. my wife and I would highly recommend this place to anyone. we will be staying again some day! the rooms are clean and neat.

Stayed here 3 nights with my husband for our anniversary. The location is perfect. A very short walk to town and away from all the noise of downtown. The innkeepers were friendly (especially their little black dog Shiloh). Our favorite thing to do on our trip was to sit on one of the front porches and relax. They have very nice wicker furniture and swings. The only noise you hear are bikes and the clack of the horses going down the street. The room was decorated very nicely. It was very cozy and cute (John Jacob Aster room). A few interesting things about the house that are not posted on the web....It was once used as a brothel in the 1800's. And after doing some renovations to the kitchen they found a little girl's indian bones buried with her moccasins still on her feet. One of the moccasins is displayed in glass over the fireplace. A little creepy but kinda neat. The B&B has the best prices on the island. Everything there is so expensive. You cannot beat $138 per night. We hope to be back soon. Thanks for helping us have a very relaxing and much needed anniversary getaway.

Stayed here for 1 night while making a several stop tour of New York and Michigan. We arrived on the early ferry to the island and our bags went on to Haan's while my wife and I toured Mackinac Island. When we arrived for checkin our bags were waiting for us and we were greeted warmly by the innkeeper and shown to our room right away. The room itself was decorated with lovely Victorian type furniture and a canopy bed. It was also very spacious and quite a good value for the price paid. It was only lacking a TV in the room - which most people don't expect at a B&B - but when your beloved Bruins are playing in game 7 of the Stanley Cup on the night of our stay, it was noticeably absent. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and there was plenty of room at the spacious table. The innkeepers were very knowledgeable about the local sites and gave us some good tips on how to make the most of our short time on the island. The location of the house is only slightly off the main streets but since you'll be walking or biking everywhere (there are no motorized vehicles allowed on Mackinac Island) this is no trouble at all - in fact if you're a person that likes a quieter stay - this is a perfect location. No doubt I would stay here again the next time we plan a trip to Mackinac.

I really can't say much bad about this B&B. We traveled with another couple and stayed in the Beaumont room which has doors separating the two sleeping areas. Room was very spacious, had a lot of dressers and closet room, and had a private entrance from the outside of the building. Bathroom was clean and the shower was very nice.

Breakfast was exceptional! Nothing like fresh baked muffins and coffee cake to go with their selection of coffee, tea and juices. The atmosphere of the dining area was cozy, and it was nice to chat with the other guests.

The innkeepers were very friendly and welcoming. Wifi service worked great, even in the guest room. About the only negative thing I could say is that I wish the matress was a little more comfortable.

I would definitely stay here again!

My wife and I were meeting her family on our first trip to Mackinac. Knowing we were leaving a day earlier, we chose to get there a day prior to the rest of the family. We took the ferry over and went to Haans. As soon as we got to Haans we knew we needed to change our baby daughter. When we picked up her bag, we realized it had fallen in the water and everything inside was completely soaked. The hosts told us not to worry, they would help us out and offered to wash and dry her clothes for us. We understand they didn't have to do this, but they offered to do it out of the goodness of their hearts. This helped set the tone for a wonderful vacation on the island. I would recommend Haans 1830 to anyone who wants to relax and have a wonderful trip on the island.
