“Disappointing.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2011

Tripadvisor is a great tool for finding nice places to stay. We stayed at several recommended places on a recent trip with great success. We found the reviews to be very accurate. But our visit to this motel was a disappointing exception.

Based upon prior reviews we were eagerly looking forward to a planned three night visit. We arrived (on a midweek day) to find the doors locked and called the posted telephone number. After someone arrived, we discovered that our reservation had been lost and we were not expected. We provided a copy of email correspondence confirming a reservation and registered for our stay.

Upon settling into our room, we discovered several disappointing factors that led us to leave and find an alternate motel. The room was badly in need of repair. The blinds were broken and didn't allow us to see the nice view out the window. The television provided only two static filled channels. The bed included only sheets and a thin blanket (no quilt or bedspread.) Worst of all was a very strong, unpleasant smell (perhaps some type of cleaning product?)

To be fair, the room was clean. The young couple operating the motel was very nice and apologetic for the confusion regarding our reservation. They offered to help with our luggage (there are stairs to climb) and provided water bottles. (It was a warm day. I'm not sure there was air conditioning, if this is an issue for you.)

We were offered another room, but we had already made our decision and secured an alternate room in Halifax. My wife was also uncomfortable because it appeared that we would be the only guests at the motel. There was no problem obtaining a refund.

The location is truly beautiful and we were very disappointed because we had been so looking forward to our stay. Indicative of the current situation was that the restaurant was closed and had not been opened this year due to some type of management issue.

Compared to other reviewers, perhaps we were just unlucky with our reservation and got a lousy room. But I regretfully cannot recommend a stay at this motel.

We spent one night at Big-Lake Motel in Peggy's Cove on October 8th 2011 and we really enjoyed our stay. A clean, comfortable, quiet little motel with great hospitality, situated on the edge of a beautiful lake. Included a delicious continental breakfast served in the cosy little restaurant. The view from the balcony was absolutely stunning. A great place to relax. Situated 5 to 10 minutes from Peggy's Cove and other sights. We plan to return in the future, but for a longer period next time. We certainly recommend this place. Thanks again to our friendly hosts Inbar & Elad who greeted us at the door and made us feel right at home. E. & M. Léger

Room Tip: Suites have a fridge, coffee maker and are more comfortable for a longer stay period.

Stumbled on this place late at night. The owner wasn't there but his daughter was managing it with a friend. It was the best place I stayed in our week in Nova Scotia. Nicely appointed room. great deck overlooking Big Lake.for breakfast in the morning. surrounded by trees and very serene. Sorry we only had time for a single night but will definitely stop back when we return to NS.

This is a fantastically clean and comfortable motel just 5-10 mins from Peggy's Cove along the gorgeous lighthouse route. The motel is literally built right on the edge of the lake (actually more of a large pond), and the view from the balcony is absolutely stunning. A very talkative and friendly host will make you feel well at home!

Free internet and parking. Overall, and excellent spot close to the sights! But remember you're way out of town, so bring any groceries/booze with you... there are great restaurants within minutes (or downstairs) if that's of interest too.

Room Tip: The honeymoon suite has a GIANT Jakuzzi!

Just finished 3 night stay. This hotel/motel is perfect for those who want to see the sites and take in the attractions. They are about 10 mins from Peggy's Cove and as close as 15 mins from some championship golf courses. Halifax is 30 mins away, Lunenburg 40 min and Liverpool an hour. You can't have a better location to stay at. It is a hotel feel without the city hotel prices. Rooms are very comfortable with a 3 piece bath (shower only), queen size bed and small table to eat or work at. This place is family operated so it is a home feeling. Family's daughter checked us in and showed us the room. She was very concerned that we were happy with our room. When we requested more towels, they were brought immediately with an apology (which was not needed). Included Breakfast was toast with jam & peanut butter, cereal, fruit, muffins, milk, juice and coffee and all you could eat to start your day. You can swim in the lake as it is very clean and warm. A great way to end the day of touring or golfing. No need to stay anywhere else. Great rates and if you book early, they often have a better rate without the mandatory non-refundable clause. (for now anyway). Check it out! You won't be disappointed.

I just got back from a small trip arround Nova Scotia, and i have to say that this place was one of my favourite places. At first i wanted to sleep in a hotel near the sea but after seeing this place i just didn't need to look anymore. The view could not be decribed in words, we came on a perfect sunny day and had our dinner on the beautiful deck of the restaurant that was facing the lake, while watching the crazy sunset. The rooms were super clean, the breakfast was very good and most important- there was free internet (for me it was very important, as i had to finish things for work). I really recommend.

My husband and I stayed here for one night and the owner was very obviously not ready for guests yet. We arrived around 3:00 to check in and found a note on the door saying that someone would be there in a half-hour. Because it was raining and we had been driving since early that morning, we opted to wait in the car. Almost an hour later the owner drove up with apologies, saying that he had to go get supplies for the motel. Because of the weather, we had planned to eat dinner in the advertised motel restaurant but it was not open for the season (nor was the bar). The owner had no suggestions for a good place to eat locally, telling us that the food at the local restaurants was only "passable". His only suggestion: a restaurant in Mahone Bay, about an hour and twenty minutes away. My husband was looking forward to a quiet evening watching TV, until he discovered there were only three channels and the reception was quite poor. I will say, though, that the room was very clean and the bed was comfortable.
We had planned for an early start the next day, but the office didn't open until after 8:00. We didn't have time to eat the advertised breakfast so I can't say what it consisted of. Being early risers, we could have used a cup of coffee while we were waiting for the office to open but there was no coffee maker in the room. All in all, it was a disappointing last night's lodging for us in Nova Scotia.
