We have chosen The Hometown Inn as our place to stay in Indian River for the past 3 years. I see I wrote a very complimentary review in Aug. 2010. Sadly, I cannot do the same for Aug. 2012. Their prices have been increased ($119 + taxes & fees for a weekend night) while the amenities seemingly have decreased. For instance, there is no longer coffee served in the lobby. Although it seems like a very small thing, after driving 5 hours, I looked forward to it & it gave me an impression of being welcomed. The impression I got this visit was "get 'em in, get 'em out". The continental breakfast was the most paltry of any I have experienced. Nothing hot, unless you toasted or microwaved the gummy waffles (oh wait, oatmeal is hot right?), not a protein except for the rubbery hard-boiled eggs and not a piece of fruit to be seen. However, if you like cold cereal, you are all set~there are several from which to choose. Oh, and the worse part of the breakfast for me was they use powdered creamer for the coffee! Really?? How cheap.
We need an accessible room, as my husband uses a wheelchair, and while the bathroom was equipped, there was barely enough space to turn around in the room. We had issues with the bed, too. It had some sort of "pad" laid on the mattress for extra comfort, I suppose, but the sheets did not fit well, causing it to come off of the corners & slide around. This was an inconvenience, especially for my husband.
We were attended a family reunion this visit & I heartily recommended this hotel to family members. I must say, I felt slightly embarrassed doing so. Perhaps, when the prices were lower & the amenities seemed adequate, I was willing to overlook a few things. But when the cost of staying 3 nights totaled almost $400, I felt woefully "taken". As one reviewer stated, I guess when you are the only hotel in town, you can charge what you like. I doubt we will stay here again, and that's too bad. I used to leave here feeling happy. Now, not so much.....
