If I’m going to eat out, my choice is almost always lunch or dinner, but occasionally I’m willing to thrill my husband and go out for breakfast. It can be difficult for me to choose a breakfast because I don’t like eggs (I typically say that I like my eggs served in cakes and cookies, not by themselves.) and I also don’t like a super sweet breakfast.
deBoer’s made me happy. My husband had the Dutch Delight. His only complaint was that the description––fiesta potatoes layerd with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon and sausage topped with sausage gravy––led him to believe that everything would be served on top of each other. He didn’t like that each item was separate. A minor complaint, but his initial reaction was the meal didn’t meet his expectations. His final pronouncement was that it was good, but not excellent.
My meal, however, WAS excellent. I had Oma’s Way: asparagus, portabellas, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes and boursin cheese in an herb omelette. I’ll take my eggs like this any day. It was all I could do to allow him to try a bite or two. I can’t emphasize enough how shocking it is for me to love an omelette.
We shared a Klompen cake with caramelized bananas. The buttermilk cake was the size of a dinner plate, but that didn’t stop us from fighting over every last crumb. Very delicious. My one complaint is that I wish more breakfast places offered what Morning Star in Grand Haven does–– the option to get real maple syrup for an extra cost.
My advice for anyone eating here is to go to the bakery first because you’ll be too full after the meal, and it’s just a shame to walk out of there without something from the Dutch bakery.
