“Very large historic district”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

I have a friend who live here and I am constantly amazed at how large this district is. The homes are all so unique, beautiful, and they sit in a very walkable area. Very near downtown so it's easy to get to.

“Great Homes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

This area is well preserved, the homes are beautiful. There is a walking tour of the homes, it is an easy walk with a few hills at times.
If you wish to walk, you can go on line to print the walking guide to the homes and a small bit of information about the home at
http://www.heritagehillweb.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/New-Walking-Tour-Brochure.pdf

Although the walk is the outside of the homes only, there are certain times of year when some of the homes open and the gardens of the homes are availalbe for viewing. These dates can be seen at http://www.heritagehillweb.org/about/calendar/neighborhood-events/

The Meyer May house which is a Frank Lloyd Wright design is open to the public just 3 days of the week. I would advise calling in advance, just to make sure they are open.

The area is quite nice.

The homes is this area are stunning - absolutely beautiful. The area is well over half gentrified and is improving every year.

“Beautiful homes, but inadequate tour map”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

There are many lovely homes in this area with interesting and diverse architectural styles. Using the official website, we tried to find the Heritage Hill Historic District office. The website promised the availability of maps at all times in a purple mailbox in front of the house. Visitors should know that the district office is tucked behind and next to the Channel 8 News Station, with only a small sign posted on a fence to direct you to the house. There were no maps available.

We used our iPad's map to read about some of the houses, but the picture of the house, although numbered, is not next to the description, so look carefully to be sure you are reading the correct info.

We received a map from hotel with locations for 60 homes. The map shown on the website has about 35 homes. It's good that the historic homes all have a plaque on the front to identify them, but it would be great if more historic information was available about all of them. We found some homes with plaques, but no mention on the map. Still, it is a lovely walk.

“A lovely walk .”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

This neighborhood has so many lovely homes to view. There are examples of many different types of architecture. Within the neighborhood is a Frank Lloyd Wright house -- the May House. The house is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and on Sunday. Unfortunately for us, it was closed on Mother's Day -- be sure to call and listen to the entire message since they list dates that it's closed at the end of the message.
For me, the best part of the neighborhood is that it shows how committed people in Grand Rapids are to preservation. Many of the houses have been subdivided rather than torn down to make way for smaller homes or apartment buildings. One of the houses was moved rather than torn down to make way for a new high school.
