“A Relaxing Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

As a Mother's Day gift for our mom, my sister and I took her to the spa at Riverwalk Place in Gladwin, Michigan. This is a unique building because condos are mixed in with hotel rooms. It is difficult to describe this set up, so you really must see it for yourself. For a set price per person, you get to stay in a lovely hotel room, a beauty treatment at the spa (facial, pedicure or massage), use of a sauna & hot tub, and $20 to spend in the Riverwalk grill. We went on a Saturday night ($169) but on weekdays the rate is reduced.

Gladwin is located somewhat in the center of the State of Michigan. There is very little to do in the area so it is very peaceful. Riverwalk Place is located on the Cedar River and there is a nice, paved walking path along the river that you can enter directly from the hotel property. If you want a little more action, you can go tubing on the river, which is a very calm float lasting about one hour. The tubing rental is near the Riverwalk property so it is very convienient. Although we did not go tubing on this trip, we hope to do so on our next visit.

If you want to do a little shopping, there are a few boutiques in the Riverwalk building. It was fun to be able to do a little shopping, but not spend all day doing it. For me, this added to the relaxing nature of this trip.

We enjoyed the food at the Riverwalk Grill especially because it was included with our room. For the $20 in certificates we each received, we were able to eat dinner and breakfast the next day!

The three of us had facials at the spa and enjoyed the experience although it was different from previous facials we had at other spas. We also received a free hair care product or lotion from the spa. Cocomango scent, love it!

I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting a very relaxing weekend. I suggest you prepare yourself for a different experience because it is unusual in that there was not a front desk to check in. On the night we were there, there were few people around which added to the relaxing nature of it, but if you want someone to be there to wait on you every minute you may not find that person.

Room Tip: Suites are available for large groups. Our room had two queen beds with a nice bathroom and a small...

We rented a two bedroom condo during a summer week at Riverwalk Place. The nightly rate was barely more than a hotel room in nearby West Branch, and Riverwalk is positively sumptuous compared to the Comfort Inn and Super 8 at West Branch. As far as I know Riverwalk is the only luxury accommodation in the whole of the Gladwin/West Branch area. And it fully met our expectations.

The condo we rented was a corner unit. When we got off the elevator, just outside the condo door in a large open area, was a community gathering room with comfy chairs and sofa- a great gathering place for a group on summer holiday. The condo was spaciously large, furnished in substantial traditional style. The furniture was of good quality, relatively new, and very nicely maintained. Televisions were located in the living area and in both bedrooms. There was a large table and chairs at the end of the living room, which we used for computers, maps, and organizing paperwork, as we were on a real estate search vacation.

The kitchen was fully furnished, with a large refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, dishes, pots & pans, and cooking and serving utensils. Kitchen cabinets and the solid surface countertops looked new and of high quality. Bathrooms were clean, bright, and felt new. A full size washer and dryer were located in a separate laundry room.

Bedroom linens were high quality, and bedrooms were very comfortable. Bathroom towels were large, fluffy, and high quality. Bedrooms and living area were carpeted, and the baths, laundry room, and kitchen had tile floors. The entire condo looked and felt fresh, and everything was clean and obviously cared for.

We were told we were staying in a condo which previously had been owned by a famous sports star - I cannot remember the name or the sport ! .... but the condo was outfitted in a superlative manner.

A large balcony off the living area was complete with a table and two chairs, overlooking the main street of town, and very nice for sitting out in the evening to watch the passing scene. The end section of a balcony off the master bedroom overlooked a beautifully manicured riverside area and gorgeous landscaped grounds with small pools of water. We sat there in the morning with coffee and newspapers, watching the birds and a bit of the river flowing by.

The feel of "coming home" to Riverwalk each day was very nice! The ground floor of the building contains beautifully stocked boutique and clothing stores - upscale but not expensive; and a comfortabe restaurant which had very good food. The second floor contains a real estate office, the Riverwalk owner's construction/architects office with a "front desk" area for condo rentals, and a beauty salon. Everyone we spoke with was friendly and informative when we asked questions about the area. Each time we had contact they were smiling, helpful, and accommodating.

The high quality physical accommodations, along with the friendly and helpful staff make this the number one choice when we need to say in or near Gladwin in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for an end unit, to get at least one balcony that overlooks the river as well as the main street...
