“Place in need of some maintenance”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2011

We were eager to spend a night at the Hampton Inn after having a bad experience in a hotel in another city (not a Hampton). There were a number of minor issues at first at the Hampton--- the TV guide in the room was an old one (we got a new one at the desk once we figured out that the channels on the TV did not relate to what was on the guide), there was only one bar of soap in the bathroom, the flip lock on the door was broken, and the bathroom door "stuck" to the floor in places-----the door needs to be shaved down. Then in the morning (after a night on a too soft mattress) we discovered the shower rod was very loose (in danger of pulling out of the wall) and the hook I hung clothes on by the shower came out of the wall altogether. I did relate most of these concerns to the front desk staff and they apologized and made notes. Hopefully these issues will be addressed. On the plus side, the breakfast was adequate, the clean bedding is a plus (no icky bedspread) and the location right off the highway made for easy access. We walked to a Ruby Tuesday for dinner and there's a WalMart also within walking distance.

The good stuff first: nice pool and hot tub, updated lobby with TVs and comfortable seating, great breakfast including some hot items like sausage gravy/biscuits, and waffles. The rooms are purely average. The beds are very comfortable, there are ample pillows, and 90+ stations on the TV. The bathroom is spacious but the toilet was not bolted to the floor. It rocked when you sat on it. The halls are noisy. There were plenty of running and yelling children the night we stayed and while that is more of an issue of bad parenting/supervision the doors buffer very little noise. At one point my husband opened the door to ask them to quiet down and the safety latch came right off the door. The room decor is dated but fine. Everything was clean.

I've stayed at this hotel 2 times in the past 45 days and each time vowed never to return. My first room smelled like a cigar parlor and the second smelled like a mold infested bayou swamp. The ac/heating unit grill was filthy in both rooms. The wi-fi password was incorrect and wasn't given the correct one until we complained several times the next day. Not a lot of options in this area for lodging but this is one I'll pass on next time around.

The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the staff was friendly. The nicest surprise was the well done lobby area and the complimentary breakfast, which was very good. Although there is a Bob Evans next door, there was no reason to go there for breakfast. August is the high season for golf and even the Hampton will charge a little more for a room than normal, so I can't say it is an excellent value, but it is a solid choice when travelling to the Gaylord area.

This property has yet to receive the furniture update so many Hampton Inns went through. It is near the highway and wedged between a Walmart and a restaurant. It is very well maintained and very clean. The real difference is that the staff is very attentive, responsive, pleasant and go out of their way to help and support your stay.

Stayed at the Hampton in Gaylord, Mi on the way to a family function in MIchigan. It is right off the freeway. There is a shopping center next to the hotel with a WalMart and other stores, should you need to pick-up anything. Our room was clean and comfortable, however, there was no microwave or refrigerator, both I have had in several other Hamptons I have stayed at. Breakfast included several hot dishes, waffles, cereals, breads, yogurt and fruit. The fitness room was small and did not have very good equipment, so I decided not to use it.
