“Groaning good flavored food. Quirky decorating, relaxing atmosphere.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

Took my mother here for lunch on a weekday and we took advantage of the 1/2 sandwich and a side option. We split the ahi tuna and crawfish sandwich. Groaning good flavor. I had the grilled vegetables side and she had the pilaf. Some nice side options besides potatoes. We also tried the smoked crabcakes and loved them. We had very attentive service and our food was delivered quickly. Located next door to The Spud Factory also worth a visit.

“Great food, inattentive service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012 via mobile

Great food, so this was a nice break from a long car ride. However, the service was suboptimal. Not at all busy, but we stood at hostess stand for 5 min before we were acknowledged and waiter was very inattentive

“Gaylord's Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

We are regular visitors to Gaylord and so have become familiar with the areas restaurants. We had largely regarded them as largely unexceptional: either the food was mediocre, of the price points too high, or a poor atmosphere. So it was by chance that we happened upon the newly opened Bearded Dog, and what a delight it proved to be. The decor may be described as "American Garage Sale": chairs and tables don't match, old doors are used as walls, much of the furniture, in another setting, would be simply tacky. Yet somehow in this setting it all works, and seems almost coherent. We both found it charming, especially when the workers proudly tell you about the silver wallpaper with the dog silhouettes which they imported from Paris.

But one really comes here for the food, and it is surprising to find food this good in this place. Since we arrived late we were shut out of our first choices (duck breast and ribs), but this emphasized the fact the proprietors only use fresh ingredients. We had an order of the Texas Caviar and the ravioli appetizer: both were very good, the latter was excellent. I had the jalapeno popper burger: they daily grind their own fresh sirloin on site, and you could taste it in the burger, which was delicious. My wife had a salad which she liked very much.

After dinner I indulged a key lime pie martini, which was fabulous. Almost too good, in fact: one can put this down in a hurry. Even my wife, who hates martinis, thought it terrific. The serving staff could not have been friendlier. With its generous happy hours, fresh ingredients, excellent preparation, and unusual decor, we will make this a regular stop on our trips up north.

This is now two places we have visited this year wherein the owners have stylized their restaurant as a paean to their dog (Moondoggies in Port Royal being the other). I'm not sure what to make of this, but if it's a trend, it's a good one, because I loved both places. They both radiated a kind of affection: small, unassuming labors of love. It's a good trend.

“Wonderful dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012

We ate outside on a beautiful July evening. My tuna was seared perfectly! The asparagus was wonderful as was the risotto. My husband's steak was not quite as raw as he would have liked but still very tender and flavorful.

“Happy Hour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

While on vacation in Michigan and attending Alpenfest in Gaylord MI, we had dinner at the Bearded Dogg. What a fun place!!!! From my Key Lime Pie Martini to delicious entrees, the food was exceptional and the wait staff friendly and helpful. The lounge-like seating with va variety of chairs and tables was extremely comfortable and added to the ambiance of the Dogg.
Service was excellent and prices very reasonable. Come early and visit the Spud Warehouse next door for some unusual gifts or treat yourself to a different kind of look. Really a fun evening with friends.
