“Beautiful National Lakeshore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a beautiful park. This is a very large park and you can see quite a bit by driving and taking short walks. However to view the majority of the park you will need to get out and hike.

A word of caution to visitors in the fall, winter, and spring months. Although the main visitors center in Empire, MI is open year round, along with the famous Dune Climb, many interesting parts of the park are basically only open during the summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Points of interests that are closed in the fall, winter, and spring are the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, the Dune Center Bookstore, Glen Haven General Store, Cannery Boat Museum, Glen Haven Blacksmith Shop, and Sleeping Point Maritime Museum. These are all very interesting to visit but you can only view these during the summer season.

“Absolutely beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Driving through Sleeping Bear in the autumn with a piano sonata playing on the car radio broadcast by IPR was simply the closest I have come to a perfect experience I have had in a long time!

“Shrinking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

The main dune used to rival any I've seen in the US but time and wind are taking their toll. I've been climbing Sleeping Bear Dunes since 1965. I would have expected the hike up to get harder with age but it hasn't. I went back to look at old photos and was horrified by how much the dunes have shrunk. The front dune has flattened while spreading toward the parking lot. You'd think the DNR would get some cranes and pile the sand back on top. Oh yea, don't take the walk back to the lake. It is miles long and there's no easy way back except to hoof it.

“Sooooo gorgeous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We loved our afternoon at this most remarkable place. Easy driving and parking, exceptional hiking and oh, my, at every turn, a different vista, a different view and another beautiful lookout. Don't miss this national treasure, an easy jaunt from Traverse City!

“A little piece of Heaven.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

There is nothing like being from Michigan and attending the piece of Heaven in Michgian called the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Before you even arrive and are on your way Up North the whole body and mind begin to relax and go into vacation mode. Everyone has their favorite spot to stop and spend time but no matter what area you chose it brings the same feeling and the same beauty. You can climb the all mighty sand dunes or just sit and watch and observe the others and your eyes gaze out over Lake Michigan. We go Up North every year and have since the late 1970's. It never gets old and it's one tradition that will never end.
