I was a big fan of the Maru Sushi located in Okemos. This spring Maru opened a second location in the neighboring town of East Lansing. The two towns touch each other but these locations represent two different ends of the suburban area surrounding Michigan State University.
I've been to the new East Lansing location a few times now and I have to say that I was disappointed by the quality of the food. The sushi did not seem to be as good as the other location. The rolls are not wrapped as well and the quality did not seem to be as I remembered it. Because of this experience I purposely went back to the Okemos location to compare and sadly I felt like both restaurants are not as good as the original once was. I"m not sure what happened, but it looks like there are new sushi chefs.
Maru is more expensive than its closest competitor in town, Sansu. I used to think that Maru was much better than Sansu but now I am torn given the price differences.
I should add that the ambiance and decor of Maru East Lansing is really pleasant, I'm just disappointed by the changes in quality. Unfortunately, I am not the only one who feels this way. My friend was leaving the restaurant and whispered to me "It's not as good as the other one is it? " I have to agree.
