I've been to Sweetwater Tavern a few times: once for lunch with a peer, once for an early dinner with my son and my nephew, and last weekend during one of Detroit's greatest party weekends--Labor Day weekend.
My previous visits were for the dang-gone fantabulous ribs! This time was for an urgent late night burger craving that came out of nowhere. Since my nephew had described his burger (and he's a big eater) as the best burger he had EVER had--I had the burger last weekend. He was right. Great service--even for carry-out during a crowded Friday night. My take out meal was well packaged with condiments, etc. for enjoyment on the go. Even the rib sauce I requested for my fries. There was nice music and other patrons at the bar were friendly during my wait.
Detroit is my hometown and I am typically not squeamish about visiting my favorite establishments at night. There's a very lively nightclub across the street that is currently named "Pandemonium," and the block was hot on this particular late night. LOL!!! So, I appreciated the security stationed outside of Sweetwater to kind of control the flow of patronage during a big weekend. Hey, it is what it is.
Overall, my visits to Sweetwater Tavern, have been extremely pleasant. It has been great for an afternoon/ early evening out for family, but would serve as a nice casual date spot, too. I plan to return there more often (I always forget about it at lunchtime). I've visited similar places in Chicago and New York, but I am nostalgic about this one. If I ever leave the area, I will miss this place.
