“Good basic hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

This is a pretty basic hotel in downtown Detroit, which is great if you are here for a quick business trip. The breakfast isn't anything fancy, but it's enough. It's a little far from the people mover station, but other than that, I liked the location. Staff were nice and the rooms were clean.

NY Reporter,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your most recent stay at our hotel. I am glad that the hotel and our service team helped to enhance your visit. I regret that you found the location of the people to be distant, we can appreciate that with the temperatures this winter. Upon your return, we hope you will consider taking advantage of the complimentary shuttle. We look forward to welcoming you back again.
Enjoy today!

The place of the hotel is close to the center. However , there was a musty smell in some places that you can't ignore or avoid. The room was good and the view was nice from the fifth floor. Valet parking was included in my booking as it is unsafe to park by yourself. Make sure you have it in your booking.

As others have mentioned the location is pretty good but that wouldn't be enough for me to return here unless I had no other options. It's not a bad place but I couldn't get past the smell of the hotel, the damage to the room or elevators, or the dark and creepy lighting they have everywhere. No matter where I went in the hotel there was a musty, sweaty, old smell...not necessarily overpowering but very hard to ignore. In the room furniture was scratched in some places and missing chunks in others. The metal elevators have lots of graffiti from top to bottom. The hallways are dark and creepy and each floor has vending machines by the elevators, stocked with condoms and meds, making it feel sleazy and making for an interesting conversation with my 7 year old. On the bright side it did have a pool and a gym which was surprisingly well outfitted with cardio and weight equipment.

I stayed here a few months ago and the hotel staff are very friendly. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to nearby downtown attractions. I availed of this to go and see the Detroit Art Institute which is magnificent. There is a People Mover stop nearby a few minutes walk away from the hotel. The hotel itself faces the Windsor Hotel which has a nice bar.

In town for the Winter Festival we booked the last rooms we could find - nervous that it was a Holiday Inn Express. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! From the valet to the maintenance engineer the staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and serviceable (a little cold when we got there, hence the engineer- fixed quickly!)
We would return for sure.

We stayed in a double room for one night for the NHL Winter Classic. The hotel is in a great location downtown, within walking distance to Comerica Park, Fox Theater, and the Fillmore. We stayed here and literally walked everywhere downtown - nearly down to GM. Our rate for NYE night was a little high but we had complementary valet and they had a large variety of breakfast items. The room we were in was smaller than I expected but manageable. Everyone we interacted with was very nice. Most surprising, we attempted to check in at 10am because we had plans starting at noon and they already had a room ready for us! Definitely would stay here again if the price was right.

We stayed at this hotel for NYE and are generally unfamiliar with downtown Detroit. That said, we knew it was close to Joe Lewis Arena and the MGM Grand. Based on that alone we figure it was worth the stay. Additionally, the hotel itself was a good hotel with free breakfast as well as a bar in case you feel like a late night drink. The area is far from spectacular but I think it's about as good as downtown gets.

Also, the valet parking lot does not appear to have a fence that surrounds the entire perimeter. Our car was fine but we found that interesting since we could see it parked from our room.
