After reading other reviews I was worried. However, I had a vey pleasant experience. For a Holiday Inn Express, I had a great time. The staff was very friendly and helpful my entire stay. My room was clean when I arrived and they did a good job cleaning it every day. The young lady at the valet service merits a special note for excellent service. The complementary breakfast was better than I had expected. They changed the hot dishes every morning which I did not anticipate. I was attending an event at Cobo Center. The hotel was a easy three block walk. There were few dining option near the hotel but the People Mover was one block away. Many option available near the People Mover stations. My only beef was a minor one. The TV remote was too basic. It did have a sleep mode button or a closed caption button. A viewer could access these features from the TV but that was a pain.

Overall, I had a great experience and I would stay there again.

“Unfortunate choice”

This hotel is in an area where there is NOTHING at all in walking distance in the evening. There is one restaurant/bar in the hotel which is mediocre and loud. If you stay at this hotel you must have a car. The hotel had no hot water when I was there - not typical of them, I am sure, but still no fun. Also, they require an ethernet cable to connect to the internet, but they could not provide one. No stores exist in the area to buy one. No water, no internet. The room heater was noisy and oscillated between scalding and freezing. Bed not comfortable. No chair for the table to work at - just slouchy easy chairs. No coffee for the in-room coffee maker. Small room. On the other hand, the staff were very nice, cheerful, friendly and helpful. Free breakfast is decent. I left after the first night, though I reserved for 3 nights.

Stayed here for the NCAA basketball tournament and was pleasantly surprised. Expected an inner city Detroit hotel to be rough around the edges, especially for a mid-priced hotel but I can tell you that it was fine if you adjust your expectations and consider what you pay for. All service staff were pleasant and helpful; no problems here. The rooms were clean and quiet. The beds and pillows, good. Shower and bathroom, fine. Breakfast bar was suitable. Exercise room and pool, bonus. The valet parking and attendants were great. The surrounding area is to be expected for this part of town but as long as you use common sense, i.e., not going out for a walk at midnight, you're fine. Besides the 'people mover' was a block away and for 50 cents a deal and a convenience. We spent most of our time walking everywhere though as sites were accessible. Ford Field and Comerica Park were about a half mile walk, as was Greektown. Recommended.
Some top spots for eating and drinking, all within walking distance in the downtown core:
Best Sports Bar: Hockeytown Cafe (typical ESPN-like bar)
Best Pizza: Pizzapapalis in Greektown by far! (go deep dish)
Best Breakfast: Clique Restaurant by a mile! (bit of a walk but worth it; serves breakfast 'til 3:00 pm)
Best Bar for playing pool: The Detroit Bar
Best for Wings: Sweetwater Tavern
Best Bakery: Astoria Bakery in Greektown...unbelievable!
Best Cheap Eats: hot dogs at Lafayette/American Coney Island (order 2 'Coneys' with everything!)

I have stayed at hotels all over the world and this Holiday Inn was by far the worst stay I have ever experienced. The front desk staff was extremely rude and unhelpful. They were impolite and offensive. The room was nice and clean. The pool was also nice. However, it is very difficult to enjoy your stay when you have been treated so badly by the staff. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in the Detroit area. There are many other hotels which are by far more of a pleasant experience.

What a great value! This was our first visit to Detroit (My husband and myself) to do alittle gambling. Did much hotel shopping online and landed here! People mover is a great asset. Took us right to the entrance of Greektown. MGM was only 4 blocks away. Valet parking quick and efficient. We had a king room. Nice and clean. The other post was correct, lots of noise about 2:30am in the streets and we were next to the elevators and could hear them humming all night long. The breakfast was awesome! Nice hot food and the lady working the breakfast bar was very accomodating. For under $100 we will definately stay here again!
