“Good value, convenient location and they treat you like a family!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

Our stay at the Holiday Inn Express Detroit Downtown was from October 30 to November 5, 2012. The goal of the trip was to have a treatment procedure at the Karmanos that it is a part of the Detroit Medical Center. We were looking for the location close to the DMC but also in the area with the restaurants to eat.
There are few hotels in the downtown area but this hotel was chosen between others because it is not only offered a breakfast incl. in the room rate but they also provide a shuttle to/from the DMC, and they have the family rooms with the fridge and small kitchenette with the microwave and dishes/utensils.
We arrived very late and were checked in fast, their reception is open 24/7. Our room was located on the 17th floor with the awesome view of the downtown with its art deco famous highrises and the community garden below.
The room. It is showing its age and some wear and tear but it was perfectly clean with everything we needed to make our stay very convenient: fridge, microwave, dishes and pans, big flat screen TV, free internet, hairdryer, iron, coffeemaker with the coffee and tea provided. The hot plate for small scale cooking was available for a loan from the reception, but we did not take it as the microwave had the oven functions as well and it was enough to make rice. They provide many other small items that you would need by request. We had a king size bed and a fold out sofa bed that we used, with the linens provided for both by request (the king bed was done when we arrived and they promptly provided all linens and blankets for the sofa later when I asked). The housekeeping was done every day with the bed made (loved it!) and the garbage taken and towels replaced as needed. I had few additional request for the housekeeping during the stay and everything was done very promptly.
The facilities. We used their free breakfast, free shuttle and gym every day. We did not have to wait for the shuttle to long although you should expect that it might be busy for 10-15 min with other guests needs. The breakfast is a self serve buffet and it had cold and hot items plus coffee and tea selection. There were scrambled and boiled eggs, bacon or meat patties, cereals, hot oatmeal, milk, yogurt, diff. bakery items and bananas, also small packs of butter, spread cheese and condiments. There was a line to get your picks on the weekend as there was a convention and lots of guests staying for it, but we ate no problems. The rest of the week it was not busy. They promptly refill everything as needed.
The location. It is located in downtown withing walking distance to all attractions, waterfront and stadiums. The area was very safe with the court building next to hotel. There was a people mover stop right by the hotel and the bus exchange station in about 5 min walk. There are not many grocery shops in the area but lots of restaurants, the closest were Lafayette Coney island with the hot dogs and an upscale steak house, we walked a little further to eat at the Bucharest Grille and loved it. There is a pharmacy store in 5 min walk on Woodward street. Ask for direction on the reception or the valet guys they are happy to point you in the right direction. We also walked to Mexican village (20 min) to shop for the food items at the Mexican supermarket, loved it.
Overall we had the very good stay at this hotel with all it has to offer, but what has really blown us away was the awesome customer service we received. They really treat you like a family, with the genuine caring attitude and a smile, ready to go out of their way to make you happy. I want to congratulate the management for keeping the level of the customer service consistently high across all the levels of the workers at the hotel, from valet and shuttle drivers that were very supportive to us when driving to DMC, the reception eager to satisfy all the needs we had, the cleaning staff and my favorite girl was Julia - she greeted everyone with the smile and support at the morning breakfast and it really helped us to have a good start every day. If we ever return to Detroit, Holiday Inn Express Detroit Downtown is going to be our place to stay again.

Room Tip: If you travel with the kids, pay more for the family room, it worth it. The pool is on the 17th floo...

I stayed here with friends for a Halloween party in Detroit last weekend. We were going all for cheap and good location. We got that and a whole lot more! The valet, night and morning staff were SO friendly and helpful. The room was clean, comfortable and bigger than I was expecting. It was also in a safe and good location of Detroit. I never felt vulnerable. We also had no problem getting a taxi just steps from the hotel. The valet price was $20/night which I thought was a bit up there, but for one night it ended up being the easiest/safest option and I had no problem with it. If I were staying longer then that wouldn't be a happy bank account. There is a parking fee package with the room, but when meeting at the hotel (driving separately), only the room payee gets the special parking fee. I would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Stayed in a double room with 2 full beds.

Thank you so much for taking the time to let other potential guests know that we are the place to stay when visiting downtown Detroit. I appreciate all the great feedback you presented. We are definitely looking over our valet parking option and deciding what we can do for the guest in these hard economic times. We look forward to welcoming you back as part of our family in the future.

Rachael was amazing, I can't say enough about her! The front office staff was friendly and accommodating. This hotel should be #1 on Tripadvisor..The hotel is located just a few blocks from Kamanos Hospital. The staff knew us by name and always asked how things were going..WOW!

We ALWAYS stay here (well, one year we could not get in & that was no fun) and always will. We live in WI and come for the Detroit Marathon every October. Staff on the phone and in person are always helpful & patient. Breakfast was good and they even crisped up my bacon for me. Comfy room, fast valet service, always polite & cheerful staff. We travel around the country & in the UK and many hotels have staff that seem to lose their cool when it is a super busy event. Elevators were efficient, and they drove me to my friends house in the hotel shuttle. Her house is not in the best neighborhood so she suggested I take a cab, but the shuttle dropped me right at her door. Also, good air temp control. Anyway, definitely a good value and a good experience. Congratulations!

Room Tip: We never hear street noise from floors 5 & up, not sure about lower floors.

We stayed during the weekend of the Detroit Marathon in mid October . It was one of the best lodging experiences we have ever had. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. They called to make sure all was well and were very prompt with our requests. They were packed for the marathon but did a great job keeping the breakfast buffet stocked with goodies including food that runners appreciate. Kudos!

This is a perfect location for the marathon. Plan to book it again next year.

Great staff! Thanks for a great weekend.

The staff at this hotel was good, the breakfast decent, and the room comfortable, However, it was a little pricey for nothing memorable. Good location. Elevator was loud although I was not very near it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevator

Thank you for rating our hotel on Tripadvisor. We appreciate any feedback that we do get from our guests. Being the lowest priced in the downtown area, offering the amenities that we do, and the warm-hearted staff, are the reasons we feel that our guests continue to choose our property when in the downtown area. Our rates are competitively positioned with the other hotels in our downtown market. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you feel this is not what you received.
