I booked our stay at the Inn on Ferry St. through Orbitz in December 2007 in preparation for the Detroit Electronic Music Festival 2008. I read lots of good reviews and decided to go for it.
The problems started the day I got there, but I gave them the benefit of doubt. We arrived earlier than the check-in time, the room wasn't available, so no problem, we knew the time was 3pm. Well, we go out and about and come back at 3pm only to find out our room isn't ready and wasn't finally checked out until 3:30pm. No biggie, it happens.
Our room has wet spots on the carpet, the shower is decrepit, old, and barely working with little water pressure, and despite booking 6 months in advance we're pushed all the way to the 3rd floor. Again, I can live with it, I'm not a wimp and it's an indie business, can't expect perfection.
On day two, the room is blazing hot. 80+ degrees. I'm usually okay with warm rooms, but after dancing and being outside all day, and paying premium money, I want a room that's nice and cool. Well, I go to change the temperature on the thermostat and it's LOCKED. Okay, whatever, I'm just going to take off extra clothes, crash, and deal with it later. We're out again most of the night to enjoy the parties, and don't come back until the next morning.
Again, the room is blazing, hitting 90 degrees. Can't change the thermostat. I get a few hours of poor sleep and decide to enjoy the rest of the festival. We come back that night around midnight to get some good sleep before we get on the plane home the next morning. Well, the room at this point is still at 90 degrees and blazing, so I decide to call the front desk to ask why it's so hot. Well, Terrence explains to me that they don't turn the A/C on until June, no matter how hot it gets. I ask if he can't make an exception considering this is our last night and it's summer...I mean come on, I just dropped ~$200 per night and I just want some A/C...it would be one thing if I was staying in a 3rd world country, but jeez. Well, he says he can't do it, owners won't allow it. I ask if he'll at least bring us some ice and waters since it's so hot and there's no fridge. He first resists, and says I can come get it. So I politely say, "Well, my room is blazing hot, it's 1am, and I've been out and about all weekend, I'd really appreciate it if you just brought it to us, it would really help out" (which I should NEVER have to do at ANY hotel, much less some fancy bed and breakfast that costs way too much money). He says "fine, I'll be there soon." And I wait. And wait. And I realize he's never going to show up. Fine, be that way, I'll quietly go home, and be sure to write the most scathing review of your hotel on every website I can.
Really, for the price this place costs you'd think they'd turn on the A/C on the third and hottest floor, or at the very least bring us free ice and water. Nah, let 'em rot. They already paid Orbitz, no way they can get their money back now.
I overlooked some of the rude behavior of the manager and receptionists early on. But this cut the cake. I'll never go to this amateur establishment again.
