“If you are trapped in Detroit, might as well be trapped here.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

This place is fine. Not excellent, not terrible. Fine. Nice views across the river into Canada make up for weird, 70's style, cement, space-aged building complex. It is also a major convention center, so the bar was swarming with conventioneers. They say business travel is not glamorous. They are right.

Room Tip: Get a view of the river, it's really quite pretty. Second choice: a view of Detroit proper.

I stayed at the Marriott November 13, 2012. The hotel itself is centrally located in the heart of downtown Detroit. It is a bit pricey but worth the price if you want to stay in the center of the action and enjoy the river scenery.
The hotel offers all of the usual amenities. Unfortunately there is no pool or hot tub but they do have a sauna. The exercise facilities are top notch. There are multiple dining choices for every budget on this property. It houses a people mover station which will get you all around downtown for a few of dollars.
The Coach Insignia Restaurant and a Joe Muer's eatery are located on the property if you want fine dining. The food court has a number of fast food choices. There is an excellent breakfast buffet available at Forty two Degrees North. Shopping is very limited but there are a few shops.
The attitude of the staff of the hotel is excellent. Everyone I met was extremely nice.
The room was comfortable but somewhat drab as far as decor.
This hotel is a great choice for sight seeing in Detroit because it is near all of the best attractions.

All Marriott employees were very accommodating, polite and congenial. I was disappointed in the room because it was lacking in iPod connectivity, poor Internet connection, no refrigerator, difficulty adjusting thermometer, and the decor left much to be desired. There was NO hot tub or swimming pool in the fitness area. The view was great, but lacking in campus retail. Enjoyed the Volt Bar and the Breakfast buffet at 42 North. In my opinion, Motor City, MGM, and Greektown hotels have better amenities in their rooms.

Management would serve the city better if they invested in upgrading this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

Stayed here in October. I've stayed at the Renaissance several times and they continue to do very well. Room very comfortable and clean. Check in was very smooth. I do wish the parking was a little more "user-friendly". But we will stay again!

I was here October 21-26 for a business conference. The hotel is located in a large complex of offices, restaurants and shops. The meeting rooms are located in pods with bridges to each entrance which makes it much easier to control noise. The lodging room was big and the view from my window was breathtaking of the river and I could see Canada's casinos and Detroit's downtown clearly. There are 72 floors so it is quite an awesome property. I did not leave the hotel during the week due to concerns of safety in downtown Detroit. But those who did used the monorail which is easily accessed inside the hotel. There are great bars and restaurants and food courts inside the hotel proper. Best is the bar/restaurant on the 72nd floor with great views. You get there by taking a glass elevator - what a ride!

I will never even TRY to stay at this hotel again. This weekend is a convention that I and many of my friends look forward to every year and once again we were expecting to stay at the Detroit Marriott. We booked our room months in advance, planned very carefully and spent hundreds of dollars on this hotel.
Well, upon arriving, we were informed that throughout the entire weekend we were expected to wear ugly wristbands JUST TO GET ON THE ELEVATOR TO OUR ROOM. And better yet!? Only 4 wristbands per room. We had 8 people. But of COURSE they must have warned us ahead of time, right? You would think so, but we didn't find out until we were at the check in counter. Four of our friends that had spend hours driving in from out of state, were now without a room for the weekend and also out hundreds of dollars in travel expenses.
And it;s not even like they were decent wrist bands. I was told that I would have to keep mine on all weekend. How am I supposed to shower with it on? And the person put my band on FAR too tight.
I honestly feel like I am being treated like a criminal for booking at this hotel. the experience is degrading and very unprofessional. I will never give my business to this place again, and neither should you if you can avoid it.

Attended a wedding on October 27th, 2012 in which I booked my room with the block of rooms reserved for the wedding party back in July/August. Upon arrival at the hotel we tried to check in and they proceeded to tell us that they had no rooms available and they were overbooked! The staff at the front desk did nothing to resolve our problem and said there was nothing they could do. So all of the wedding party and myself had to call around and find rides home! All in all terrible way to end the night and would not recommend this hotel to anyone!
